I travel back and forth between my homes in VA and RJ. I bought the home in RJ 2 years ago, opened a bank account, bought a car, had emergency surgery, transported my pet from/to RJ, obtained a drivers license, wired money, hired a maid, paid real estate taxes, filed a federal tax return, pay monthly utility bills, and much much more. I will try to answer your questions.

Whew!!! With all of that, what are your monthly costs living in your town, in Brazil. It sounds like you have a GREAT job. Where do you work and are they hiring? :-) I live in the U.S. looking to move to Brazil. I am unemployed, planning to use rental income from the U.S. to support myself. In your opinion, will $1500 per month be enough to support a single female, with no kids? Thank You.

I live in Niteroi RJ on the beach. My monthly expenses run about 3000 reais monthly which includes my assoaciation fees, utilities and food. i own my home meaning no rent no mortgage. That would add another 2000 reais a month if i didnt. If I need heath insurance in Brasil that would add another 800 reais a month although that is variable upon the option you select.

on $1500 US per month you will not be able to survive or at least I would not be able to. You should know that everything, and I mean everthing, is more expensive in Brasil than in the USA.

Some places in Brazil are cheaper than Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia. In a cheap place you can live in a spartanian way with $1500 ( roughly R$2400). I mean in a studio (about R$ 800), no health plan (about R$ 300), prepaid cell phone, no car and no escess in supermarket (R$ 500).
You can teach english to complement your income.
Here in Brasília, a private english teacher make about R$ 60 per hour. That's the amount I pay to my teacher.
