Best Place to Live in Brazil

Hi,
I'm moving to Brazil in a couple months and but I haven't chosen where yet. Despite browsing similar posts I haven't found an answer that fully convinces me.

I'm 25yo guy and I will be working remotely in IT (so literally any place with an internet connection is a candidate)

Some things I'm (ideally) looking for:
- beach
- good weather
- low crime rate
- medium size city
- young population
- good nightlife
- nice city (parks, restaurants, coffees)
- cultural activities
- reasonable cost of living
- a local tech scene is a plus
- bonus points for a good local soccer team

It seems Rio is the place to be for young professionals but I'm a little turned off by the cost of living, the high crime rate and the size of the city.

Please suggest. Thanks in advance!

Dakins, I haven't been there but I've read a lot of good recommendations for Florionopolis. It has what you are looking for but on a much smaller scale than Rio.

Hi, I live in Rio and it's a great city for young people. The beaches are great and it has a varied nightlife scene. The Zona Sul are of Rio is expensive but there are other options within Rio that will give you a smaller city feel at a morte affordable cost of living. For example, Barra de Tijuca and Recreio are large beach neighbourhoods to the west of the city. Or there are the ocean beaches of Niteroi to the east of the city. Both options are about 1- 1.5 hours by public transport to Centro (depending on traffic flow). Barra and Recreio are especially good for beach life. This are is known as the Miami of Rio. It has many huge shopping malls but is a place where having a car is an advantage as the metro will not reach here until 2016. Hope this helps.

Hi, dakims

My family and I have lived in Florianópolis for 9 years altogether (1980-1985 and 2008-2012). The island has all the requests you have mentioned in your post.
Florianópolis is often no good to those people looking for employment locally but if you work remotely via the Internet this place will definitely be the best for you to live in Brazil. Moreover, there are growing numbers of foreigners coming to live here. Single guys, single women, families, the lot. I too work remotely as a technical translator and a commodities broker. It is the ideal situation. No need for employment locally ...living in a gorgeous place. However, on your post you say you are planning to move to Brazil in a couple of months. This is not good if you will require rental accommodation. Although it has become an important IT cluster, Florianópolis is still essentially a tourist summer holiday place which means that practically all rental accommodation must be available to tourists from Dec. 20 till the end of February and sometimes up till the end of Carnival or Easter Sunday.
This means that from August onwards you will not find an annual rental place to live in that is available unless you plan to stay for 4 months. The shortage of long-term rental accommodation in Florianópolis is endemic. It is the biggest problem for anyone coming to stay. The problem is so serious that mini-hotels and guest-houses rent out their apartments from March to December at reasonable market prices to students, teachers, trade reps, etc. but all these people must move out by Nov. 30 so that the flats become available to tourists that will start arriving just before Christmas and will pay much higher prices. So please pay attention to the fact that if you happen to find rental accommodation when you arrive you will certainly have to move out at the end of Nov. unless you are lucky enough to make a better arrangement with the owner of the property which is most unlikely.
Please, feel free to ask any questions about Florianópolis. Skype cc possible.
Bye for now,
