Hi there! I live and work in Fortaleza, Brazil and I am wondering why you picked Recife as the city you would like to move to. There are more attractive and better cities on the Northeast coast such as Natal, Joao Pessoa and of course, Fortaleza. Of those mentioned, Fortaleza is the largest at 3.5M. As far as my city is concerned, a one bedroom apartment in the best and safest area of the city, which is also near the beach with great transport available, would be around R$1,500. From this apartment, you could walk to everything and not need to rent a vehicle unless you really wanted to. I live in this same area and have for 8 years. If yhou need more info, email andy@andyneill.com

Actually Recife is more developed than Natal, Fortaleza and Joao Pessoa. Recife HDI is 0,765 according to new UN methodology. Fortaleza HDI is just 0,698, Natal 0,711 and Joao Pessoa 0,720.
Recife also generates more jobs (52 thousand per year) against 11 thousand of Fortaleza and higher salaries (1.282 reais average) against 952 reais average of Fortaleza.
So yes, who choose Recife is completely right.

Hi there! I deal with people from Europe and the US and Canada who want to move to Brazil, and I can tell you that Recife is not high on any lists because of what I might call a "liveability" factor. It's beaches are not as good as other cities and it's reputation in the outside world is not as good. It's seen outside as more of a "business city" or "industrial city" than a "residential" city. Among the people i talk to, it's the low city on the totem pole among cities on the Northeast coast. Natal and Fortaleza are both larger than Joao Pessoa so I can see why JP as it's known would not win a high place in this unofficial poll, The fact that more Brazilians pick Fortaleza to either vacation in or retire to than any other in Brazil, including Rio, say something.

Hi there! I am not deceiving anyone and you don't deal with the number of visitors to Brazil that I do so I'm in a better position to judge what others think. I am not expressing MY opinion, only that of many others. It also has the reputation of being the only city on the ocean that has sharks! I don't know from first hand info about this but I have heard that for years. I'm not sure what you mean by developed. The work on the largest aquarium in South America continues, as does the completion of the roof on our big stadium, which for World Cup football, will hold 67,000. We also have continuing work on our metro system, which includes portions underground. There is also a new passenger terminal being started to handle increased cruise ship traffic to Fortaleza. We have one of the largest and most modern airport terminals in the Northeast, if not the whole of Brazil. Now what is not developed? Andy.

Andreia, you're making a good choice. I'm not making this up, but if you do your own research, you'll find out that the north-eastern region of Brazil is today the fastest growing developing area of Brazil. They need more professionals and its an excellent area for foreigners to begin.
The states of Ceara and Rio Grande do Norte are competing head to head with each other, which is good news. All states in Brazil must compete with each other as the Republic was designed to be.

Hi there! I will stick by my recommendation that the Northeast coast is an excellent place for expats but also that Fortaleza, Natal and Joao Pessoa are the top places to settle. Andy Neill Fortaleza, Brazil

Actually the Top places in Northeastern Coast of Brazil by HDI, Income Percapita and Generated Jobs are Recife and Salvador, respectivelly.
Fortaleza, Joao Pessoa and Natal are the poorer capitals.

Hi there! These stats have nothing to do with "livability"! Salvador is just plain dangerous! Recife has the reputation on the outside as being, as I said previously, not a residential city but a business and industrial city. Not that they don't have residential areas but that is how they are perceived on the outside by the many foreigners I've talked to about Brazil. I had 2 clients of mine visit Joao Pessoa for a month in August. They come from the US. They told me it was very quiet, not like a big city and if that's something you're looking for, then fine, but there is very little nightlife in case you want that. I have another good friend from London who is coming over to visit both Salvador and Fortaleza next month. he owns a rental property here in fact. He has been to Salvador many times and won't stay in the city but goes to one or more of the outside beaches. I will tell you that in terms of money, there is lots where I live in Fortaleza. I have been told by people who are in the business that there are 2...count 'em, two of rthe top-of-the-line Mercedes sports cars here...the new ones with the gull-wing doors and they cost around R$1M each. There is also a Lamborghini here in the same price range, R$1M. So the city is not poor! At all! What I tell my clients is that if they want to move to the Northeast coast, there is Fortaleza, JP and Natal, but I've already told you my feelings and impressions of others about JP and I tell my clients that Natal is actually more expensive than any other city on the coast north of Rio, except for Fortaleza. My clients had done years of research on places for a possible move permanently away from the US and selected Fortaleza and JP, the two places they sepnt July and August. I don't bore them with stats...i tell them to take a look. When they came back after a month in JP and the immediate area, they said it's more like a country town...but if you want a quiet place, then it sure is nice. They have beautiful beaches....some of the best on the whole coast. .

Well i live in Brazil although i'm not Brazilian and i know Fortaleza and Joao Pessoa and those cities are not livable.
They're too much poorer than Recife and Salvador... So its not a good choice to live there. Its a White Guy opinion.

Hi there! You have to stop spouting this stuff!!! There are literally hundreds of expats and Gringos who will prove you wrong. Both my clients in july who spent a month here in Fortaleza and a month in JP are moving within 12 months and probably to Fortaleza. They could hav e decided to go anywhere in the country but chose here. Why do you think that might be? Because it's unlivable! And Also...I am also a so-called white guy! As I mentioned, Salvador is basically unsafe and Recife is not a residential city so give it up.
