Hi Everyone,
We are looking to rent a house long term in Floripa starting April 2013. We are on a student visa.
We hope to find; 1-2 Bedroom house with garage located not very far from lagoa da Conceição - 5-15 minutes drive is fine.
Budget; 800-1200 Reais a month.
And we also want to buy a car.
Does anyone have an experience buying a car? And what is the price for new and used cars? (just an estimate) A car good for two people is fine.
Would be huge help to find some advice.
Thank you

Hello, Student visa?? Does this mean you´ve been accepted by a university or equivalent course here in Brazil? With cash in your pocket for 800 - 1200 you´ll find a place quickly. Normally close to the university because they are accustomed to temporary folks and negotiate! Check with the university as well. Car.... First get a legal translation of your drivers license, go to the main DETRAN office in Floripa and they´ll swap you for a Brazilian DL with just a little bit of hassle. Shop for a car when you are there which makes a whole lot of sense don´t it? R$7k - $10K should get you a decent ride and easy to sell when you are leaving. Start the car before paying for it ok?? hahaha Need to know more?? Ask away! Krgds, Spencer

Ysabel, I am a Registered Real Estate broker in Florianópolis. Long-term rental accommodation in Florianópolis is scarce and you should start looking well before you land on the island. Right now, to be precise. You must make sure that you sign a good contract. Necer rent without one. Finding something 5-15 minutes away from Lagoa for the amount of money you are willing to pay may prove to be a real challenge. Does it have to be a house or could it be an apartment? You said you are coming here on a student visa. On Monday, I will check the legislation regarding buying a car on a student visa to see if there are any restrictions. A reasonable price for a simple car that will not give you many problems is probably around R$ 10,000+. Anything below that is bound to be a big headache. In any case, to buy a car if there are no restrictions you will need the Brazilian Taxpayer's Number (CPF) that may be very easily obtained from the local Inland Revenue Office. If you would like to discuss these matters further, please call me on Skype or ooVoo. Happy New Year! Margaret Arlington Reg. Real Estate Consultant - CRECI-SC 15839

We own an apartment about 60k north of Flora on the beach. Last year we bought a car. The hardest part was all the papers everyone needed and the time the process took. Getting the documents in place and processed seemed to take a long time. Translated passport, marriage license, CPF, Notary, etc.
Just be patient..

Yes we have been accepted to study Portuguese at UFSC. We visited Floripa for 2 weeks last Nov. and have a chance to met alot of expats that advise us to get a student visa to be able to stay for 1 year with no problem. We want to buy a house and live permanently in Floripa.
We would like to rent a house first rather than an apartment and also closer to lagoa concecao.
You mention about getting a legal translation of my drivers license. Im a French living in Chile, should I get a translation here in Chile or in my home country?

Hello, Ysabel I have seen your post.
I am a Reg. Real Estate Broker and Destination Services Provider in Florianópolis. I have just phoned DETRAN, the Road Traffic Department, regarding your drining license. They have confirmed that you can drive in Brazil with your international license for 6 months only. If you intend to stay in this country longer than that, you must have your license translated by a legal translator here and then take the original doc. and the translation to DETRAN to be exchanged for the Brazilian license. Should you need any further assistance regarding any aspect of moving here including rental accommodation and buying a property, please feel free to contact me.
Bye for now, Margaret Arlington Reg. Real Estate Consultant - CRECI-SC 15839
