90 days almost up. Options on Tourist visa

Post New Topic

I'm a Canadian currently in Brazil on a tourist visa that has a 180 days maximum per year allowance, and 90 days stay maximum per entry.

I forgot about the 90 days maximum and realize that it is coming up fast in about 7 days. My plan was to stay here for another 2 or 3 weeks only. I don't know if it makes sense to go to the Military Police to ask for an extension., I'm reading various things that it will count towards my one time only 90 day extension which I don't want to waste if I am only staying an extra few weeks.

So, if I read the rules on the visa correctly, should I not be allowed to take a quick flight to Buenos Aires and stay for 2,3 or 4 days. (a visa run, I suppose they call it). Then fly back and re-enter on a new passport stamp valid for 90 days?

I am still within my 180 day allowance, so I don't see why there would be a problem. I can't find any information on the internet about how long I have to be out of the country before coming back in. There doesn't seem to be any restrictions on that on my visa. I am looking for advice as I am in a bit of a jam here....

Think of it this way you get a total of 180 day every year. If you stay over 90 days then you need a extension. They change the rules about the 180 days. It use to be from January to January. Now it from the time you land in Brazil is the year time So what every you do it will make your days less if you over stay. That if you are planning to come back within a year, They also charge fines if you do not renew each day. Hope this helps

Hi there!
First of all I'm also Canadian...been living in Fortaleza for over 8 years.
I would suggest you take the time and go to the Policia Federal and get your extension.
That way, you stay out of any trouble.
If you overstay, you are subject to the fine which is R$8.8 a day.
It should not be a big deal and you're good for another 90 days.

Policia Federal (Federal Police) and not the Policia Militar! This is where you go when any questions arise as to visas. Eighteen years ago, I would do the same.... leave the country and then enter again having them note same on my passport. I would go to Paraguay. A one day excursion out of the country will do just fine. They know exactly how, what & why your doing this and they really don´t care. They just follow the law.
Good luck,
Spencer

What you are talking about doing is pretty typical in my experience though it's been years since I or any of my friends have had to do that sine we have permanent residency visas now. I have never heard of a minimum stay outside of Brazil for 90-day renewals - I think most people do a weekend like you are saying.

Have you tried talking directly with anyone from the Policia Federal? I once had a question about my daughter's passport expiring and asked the PF agent at the entrance to the immigration check at the international airport and he was pretty helpful - probably more effective than going to an actual PF station and trying to get an appointment. You probably have to speak Portuguese though.

Tried to extend my permit by traveling to Foz do Iguaçu / cuidad del este , and stramping my passport. Authoritys are way more strict and will not acept this anymore.

There is no reason this wont work. Maybe it wouldn't work if you left and came back the same day.

If you fly out and fly back in and give yourself 3 or so days I can't anticipate a problem as long as you have a tourist visa and are still within your 180 day limit.

My visa allows multiple entries with each entry allowing up to 180 days within a 12 month period. There are no restrictions on how long you have to she out if the country for between visits.

The visa gives you the permission to do this. However you can always be denied for any reason, but if you are still within your 180 days it shouldn't be a problem.

Maybe your situation is different. I know some of the land point if entries may do things manually. If I enter through an airport everything should be clear. They scan passport. Within 180 day limit? Ok, come in.

Also, anibal you didn't mention if you had a tourist visa or not, and what the details of the visa were. You also didn't mention how long you left for. If you don't need a tourist visa, then maybe they manually analyzed your entry stamps and made the determination.

Hi there!
I would make very sure you get your extension before the visa runs out.
This will make sure you have no problems when doing the process for your permanent visa.

You are married to a Brazilian and the marriage took place in Brazil?? Yes/No? As you have stated... yes. Go to the policia federal, pay the tax first, start the process of your permanent residency and wam... you no longer have to worry about your tourist visa! Worst case scenario.... you´ll need a few extra days to file your forms and you´ll maybe have to pay a small fine. They are not going to throw you out of Brazil.
