I am currently going to school for my Bachelors of Business in International Business Management. I am extremely interested in Brazil, and have been wanting to move there for quite some time. I am an online student, so I can continue to go to school as a US Citizen and live in another country while going to school the US.
The concerns I have are: If I move to Brazil and get an apartment down there then where should I move to, Sao Paulo or Rio?
Will I need to have a job to get a visa? I could live off of US School Financial Aid living here in the US, so I am sure doing so in Brazil would be easier done?
I am also a US Military Veteran who receives a medical disability pension.

First, your desire to move to Brasil is commendable - great place. Go online to The Rio Times.com, they have an article in this weeks issue regarding cost of living in Rio. Last time I checked , permanent residency required approximately a $3500/mo , give or take, permanent net income. Learning to speak Portuguese is going to be a must, unless you plan on living in an expat enclave. I'm sure you receive more info following your post. Good luck!

Hi there! You will need to be in one of the visa categories to receive a permanencia. There are many twists and turns to the visa process and you need to talk to someone at the Brazilian Consulate nearest you about what you might need. There are also other knowledgeable people on this site who might be able to help. Moving to another countrty, in particular one where they don't speak your language, is a big deal and you need to think it through very carefully. Rio and Sao Paulo are the two most expensive cities in the country and are actually more expensive than cities in the US, including New York and LA. There are other great places to live, such as the city I have lived in for 9 years called Fortaleza. It is on the Northeast coast where the weather and beaches are best and it's not as expensive to live as are the southern cities. My email is andy@andyneill.com if you want to communicate directly. Boa Sorte!

I would pick Rio over São Paulo any day!
You could also consider some other great cities too! The Northern cities have beautiful beaches and are a little cheaper too.
Anelll, why do you say Rio and Sao Paulo are more expensive than New York? In my experience, I have found both cities more expensive than elsewhere in Brazil, but housing costs and food costs (basic needs) are still much cheaper than in New York.
How are you making this comparison?

Hi there! I am just repeating what has been written in many places...that SP and Rio are the most expensive cities in either South OR North America! THe other thing about those tow is their size...they are so large...in particular SP, that you are in some danger of just becoming a number. On top of that, the traffic jams in SP are legendary!

I will be bringing in roughly R$2600 a month..
Is that feasible?
I don need an elaborate quality of living. All I will need is internet accessibility that is most important since I am an online Undergraduate student. Quality of life to me is of some importance but not as dire as just the experience alone. I am wanting international experience since my degree is geared toward that. I don't know Portuguese, I know Spanish to an extent.

Hi Anelll,
I've read that in a few places too, but I did some more research for myself and found out that the cost of living in Rio and SP are both much cheaper than in New York City.
Statistics were based on food expenses and also cost per sq foot of real estate to buy and rent.
New York came out much more expensive. There was a recent Forbes magazine article I read that had these stats in it.
I haven't seen a ratio comparison though where they compare avg sq.ft. cost against average income and then compare the differences between cities, so I can't speak to that.
