Home Schooling in Brazil Legal or Not?

I moved my family to Brazil from Florida 3 years ago. We are all US citizens. I'm very disappointed with the private international school system in Brazil. We pay an incredible amount of money for our two children and feel they are falling way behind their cousins in the US, whom are in the same grade. I was researching a few American online home schooling options for US citizens living abroad and was planning to sign up at least my oldest in the online program. Some of my friends in Brazil advised me that it is illegal to home school your kids in Brazil. I figured someone in this community can best advised what my options are and if this law applies to foreigners leaving in Brazil with permanent work visa.

What city are you in? Are there no American or British schools there?

We are in campinas and yes, there's some American schools in the region. My children are attending one of the international American school in the region. We are just not seeing the same level of curriculum and education that we left behind and the kids are definitely falling behind. The best option I could think of is home schooling, which surprisingly is gaining a lot of popularity even in the US.

I recall reading a few articles here and there about home schooling in Brazil. The conclusion was that under current law it's illegal. It's kind of ironic, obviously, given the drop out rates.

Have you considered hiring a private tutor to help? Alternatively, you can buy lots of material online these days and help your child out yourself. On Amazon I have been able to get a number of good books. The Brainquest series are popular. Other ones include Math Made Easy, Reading and Understanding Science, etc. You will see in the online reviews which ones are good and actually used by homeschoolers in the US.

I live not far from Curitiba, and I too am dissatisfied with the K-12 education available here. My wife and I are now homeschooling our kids (9 and 11 years). Check out Connections Academy, we also supplement their curriculum with the Kahn Academy courses among other material available online. And I couldn't care less about what the Brazilian government has to say. They've got bigger fish to fry than me. All things being equal, there is no reason to advertise the fact for that matter. Go to it!

If you are looking for good schools, in this area they are usually run by church organizations like the Catholic Church.
The largest private school in Fortaleza is called Christus and has several campuses in the city. It is not cheap but what they do is good in my experience. They have a high school which is taught all in English.
Also I wanted to mention that if anyone is coming to Fortaleza, I know about apartments to rent or purchase here. Just message me at andy@andyneill.com.

The rules against home schooling your kids, does not apply only in Brazil. Many countries have this same rule, and where it becomes a problem is when the child wants to enter the education system in that specific country at a later date. If you chose to home school, make sure that it is accredited internationally.
Some online schools require that the student is registered in the USA, with a US address, if the are American citizens.

Here more info that home schooling in Brazil is NOT illegal. Ignore the idiotic websites typed by morons from the US and know nothing what is outside their borders. Really, those people type whatever they want, but don't travel to do research. You get so sick of them that perhaps it's time that Brazilian close it's borders for US citizens.

Hello, as we are considering switching our daughter from her private school here in Sao Paulo to a homeschooling program I was wondering how did you deal with the school transfer? We are afraid that her school might give as a hard time if we pull her out and request her transcripts be sent to an overseas homeschooling office... Thanks in advance! Mechi
