Au pair/nanny jobs in Brazil : )

Hi everyone : ) I was adopted from Brazil when I was three and I have been living in the US ever since. It has been my dream to go back to Brazil and to get a job taking care of children so I have created profiles on several au pair websites but I haven't been contacted by any Brazilian families. Has anyone been in this same situation or have any advice for me? I know the best way to get a job in Brazil is to network, so maybe it would be easier to find a job once I am in Brazil. I would prefer to secure a job before I leave so I don't risk spending everything I have saved up looking for a job when I am there. Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated, thank you so much : )

Hi there!
What area of Brazil are you looking in?
I would think the larger cities like Sao Paulo would be a better bet having business families that need assistance with children.
Having said that, even though jobs might be more scarce in smaller cities away from the business south...where I live in Fortaleza has a good percentage of families which are in the top percentile of the economy and also need assistance.
The pay is probably less but so is the cost.
Also the weather is better and the beaches are great, as you already know.
I have lived here for ten years and have some friends in that percentile.
I think a small ad in the classifieds of the local papers here would be a good idea.
But you are also right in that finding work when you already have "boots on the ground" as they say, is a good idea, even if it's just for a visit.
I have assisted a lot of people coming to this area over the time period beginning in 2005 os if you want to explore that possibility, I can help.

I wonder whether Brazilians are prepared for the 'au pair' type of help. I think they will tend to see you as a mere maid and your dream would go down the drain.

I would contact members of the foreign communities such a schools that have contact with lots of foreign working parents and would probably be able to help you. If you were British, I would be able to put you in touch with a client of mine but he need someone who speaks British English. Get in touch with the American Embassy as well as the embassies of Canada and European countries in Brasilia. Explain your situation to them. I am sure they must know people in need of an au pair. But try foreign companies and schools as well. Send them a CV with photo and a 'No criminal record certificate' from the authorities in your hometown as well your education certificates. Tell them your story.

Do you have any training in child care?

Do you do still have your Brazilian citizenship? This would be very helpful.

Good luck!

Generalization Time: No doubt, anyone that can afford an au pair will treat you as a maid in brasil. it's not that you might not find someone who understands what an au pair is, but it will be a rare find in Brasil. They simply don't think the way families in the USA think about what an au pair does and doesn't do. you could even have a contract that spells it out but it will become meaningless. they look at people in the labor force as 3rd class citizens in general.

Besides the schools listed on the newcomers-sp website you should contact the Pan-American Christian Academy http://www.paca.com.br/.
Our children attended this school many years ago and the staff were very nice and friendly.

Hello there. My name is Marcos and I am brazilian, and I happen to have a daughter in US working as au pair. If you answer some questions it will be easier to try to help you. Do you speak other languages besides English? Do you have a degree or any professional certificate? What is your schooling level? How old are you and do you have any work experience? Because right now, I would NOT advise anyone to come to Brazil, we are in a serious economic and political crisis and jobs are scarce. However, IF you have a US degree etc. it will make things easier as foreign degrees / certificates are highly valued here. But as for working as au pair, I am sorry but I must concur with other posters, we are actually two countries in one, Belgium and India, the very rich and the very poor, and the "Belgium" part does look upon the "India" part (humbler help workers such as maids, nannies etc.) almost with scorn, so you would most likely get a McJob at best, i.e., underpaid and undervalued. I think your best bet here would be working as tourist guide or with expats. But anyway, the best of luck for you, nothing comes easy so if you really want to, you will find something. :)
