Brazil - American Visiting Porto Seguro Area

I am a US citizen who is planning to meet a Brazilian woman in January who I met online and have been talking to since March. She is originally from the Eunapolis/Porto Seguro area and we are planning to spend most of the time in nearby Arraial d'Ajuda and Trancoso.

I have been taking Pimsleur courses on Portuguese to learn some language basics. Any tips for an American citizen who has never been to Brazil would be greatly appreciated! Obrigado!

Do you want the absolute truth, or just an answer that will support whatever romantic fantasies, you may have already dreamed-up, for yourself?

Here's the truth. If your Brazilian (online) lady-friend has a Brazilian passport, then tell her to apply for a 6-month tourist visa, from the US Embassy, naming you as her U.S.sponsor. If she gets the visa first, then, and ONLY then, should you travel to Porto Seguro.

Will you heed the advice you've just been given? The odds are 90% against it, mainly because most Americans are "determined" to learn their lessons "the hard way".

CAPICHE?

Hi, and thank you for the truthful response! That's what I was hoping for. She already told me she has already received the 10 year visa since she wants to visit Miami and Disney World within the next year or so (she told me this months ago). I have seen her Facebook profile and we are friends on Facebook. Before we were Facebook friends, I did my own research and found her mother's profile which has little (if any) privacy settings and looked to see that pictures followed her story (graduation pictures, etc), and they did. She says she is an orthodontist, which is consistent with all pictures I saw. We have talked since March and she has never directly asked for money or hinted that I should give her money. She did say that it would be best if she and her dad's assistant (since she said she has trouble driving a standard) pick me up at the airport in Porto Seguro to go to Arraial d'Ajuda and I have declined the offer in lieu of taking a marked taxi to get there. She seems genuine, fun, and a little crazy. I'm 35 and she's 27. I am keeping my expectations low with the mindset of just meeting as friends and taking it from there. She says has a place to stay in Arraial since her dad lives there. We have talked about visiting Trancoso too (which she said she does not prefer as much as Arraial) and she suggested we share a room if we go there. I am only looking at places to stay with lockable safes in both Trancoso and Arraial. I know only basic phrases in Portuguese from Pimsleur and Duolingo.

Do you think they will let her register for a visa with me as a sponsor if she already has a visa? Thanks again for your help!

I'll add that we have spoken on Skype and I have confirmed that it is her in the the pictures. Her English is not bad and she spent about 4 months in Canada one time.

Now that's what I call "playing it smart" The age gap is perfect @ 7-years, w/ you being the senior.

If she already has a 10-year multiple-entry visa to the US, then she definitely has her own act together in Brazil, and does not NEED an American sponsor.

That keeps the cards "openly" on the table, with no hidden (behind the scenes) agendas, on her part.

Brazilian women have serious "trust" issues re: dealing with men. Brazilian men are "Latinos", and they love ALL the ladies.

Sounds like you off to a sensible start. Take care, and best wishes.

Brazilian women tend to be quite astute, and adept @ reading people. Since it is "always" the female, who does the choosing, the best over-all compatibility test, is for her to first visit with you, in the US.

That way she'll become better acquainted with you, on your turf, prior to making a decision to "invite" you, into her life, "after" she returns to Brazil.

Play it that way, for the long-haul, cross-culture relationship, and there will be fewer doubts about the future, on both your parts.

I've been happily married to a Brazilian lady 45-years. Do we still have our cross-cultural differences of opinions? Yes, and quite often so! She is still a Brazilian, as I am an American.

However, we are best friends first, last and always.

We are now in our 70s and still dance the Samba together, everyday.

Let her rest assured, that she has found a friend in you, and you will have an excellent partner, for the rest of your life. Guaranteed!

Again, best wishes and Cheers, :-).
