Hello!
I am a translator & interpreter and a Lic. Real Estate Broker specialising in settling-in services.
My first piece of advice would be that you go to the Brazilian Consulate in the region where you came from. Since you are already in Brazil, I believe you should go to the consulate of your country in Rio and see what info they can provide. They must have lawyers that can help you.
Unfortunately, I do not know any lawyers specialising in expat matters in Rio. However, I do know one in Florianopolis where I live and work. I have just called him to talk about your issue but he will only be back at the office tomorrow morning.
Please feel free to call me on Skype, if necessary.

I hope you do not mind my asking: where are you from?

Hello again!

The lawyer I mentioned on my previous post has just phoned me. He says that, as far as he knows and unless there have been any recent changes, Brazilian Immigration Legislation poses no impediment on health grounds to grant a permanent resident visa . You would be treated as any other candidate to live in Brazil. However, there are other requirements that must be met.

Please, contact me if you would like to talk to this lawyer.

Bye for now,

There are certain requirements you need to meet before you qualify.
Check with your BR embassy where you live.
The other option is to marry a Brasilian.
I'd be real careful there because a newcomer can be taken real easy.
A long term relationship would be the best route
Take your time and enjoy Brasil

I retired here 2 years ago and the move went smoothly. This only was possible because I KNEW what I was getting into.

Let me ask you these questions:
1-do you speak the language?
2-how many times have you stayed here?
3-do you have a LONG TERM friend here to guide you?

Brasil is NOT THE USA. Your inexperience WILL be taken advantage of.

So a word or two in your ear.

Leave your money in the USA accessed via ATM as you need it until you are comfortable with the moves you want to make long term.

If you have NOT spent time learning about LIVING in Brasil,,DO NOT commit yourself financially or emotionally based on what you see in Rio on a vacation.

You are ex military, do your recon.

At the very least turn around the next time you are on Copa beach, SEE the favelas? It is this contrast that is at the base of LIVING the reality here.

I have no business interest in offering my advice. If you want to contact me directly reply to this post and we can work that out.
