I am currently seeking information concerning retirement in Brasil. I have been married to a Brasileira for 10 years now. We got married in Brasil so everything is registered there. My concerns are living in Brasil without worrying about the amount of time I can stay in the country.

Joaozinh, I have had my Retirement Visa or CIE with no expiration for about 18 months and live in the NE of Brazil in Rio Grande Do Norte. You don't say where you are currently. I am from the USA and I had a Permanent Resident Visa that had just expired about a year before I applied for the retirement visa. You can go onto the Policia Federal website, locate applications for RNE. For retirement, Brazil requires that you be at least 60 years of age and have a retirement income of no less than $2,000.00 USD per month. We just assisted a couple from Norway obtain their retirement visa and it is not all that complicated. File out the paperwork on-line, set an appointment at your local Policia Federal that processes these requests and then go to he appointment. You will be directed to get 2 passport photos, copies of your passport with all pages, pay about R$264.00 for processing and make another appointment. At the 2nd appointment they will finger print you, take your photo, and take all paperwork and photos from you that you obtained after the 1st appointment...........REALLY IMPORTANT....At the 1st appointment asked the person processing you to print out a bileto for the R$264 payment as the website doesn't work when you ask it to provide the bileto. The bileto has he all important bar code on it so that you can make the payment at the bank.

Things changed drastically in 2014
You can apply for a perm visa RNE at the Federal police and they have a new expedited RNE program, takes only a few months
You can stay indefinitely while it's being processed
IF you leave Brasil for more than 2 years it cancels but you can apply for multiple RNE's if you need to

Thanks so much for all of the information! This is very helpful. I am still living in the U.S. But am planning to live with my wife in Minas Gerais. We will be moving sometime next year. I am doing research now to avoid the unknowns further down the line. I am sure I will be asking more questions in the future.

Try and minimize the amount of house hold items that you bring into Brazil. Although with a retirement visa, the items are tax free to bring into the country but the cost of a container and shipping it to Brazil is very, very expensive.

I got mine in about a month because I had one years ago
The Federal Police people are so professional and nice, they'll help you figure out the forms.
Believe it costs about R$300 total paid online. Good luck

BTW ... since you are married, there is NO reason to go for a retirement visa, being married is enough - don't complicate it.
And like I tell everyone, DON'T import A THING except for your clothes and small personal stuff. Brasil has beautiful furniture, every appliance you'll ever need, nice clothes and more.
Right now the reai is in YOUR favor so things will be less.
Have a big garage sale and donate your 'stuff' to a good charity.
IF you're going to LIVE in BRASIL, you gotta LOOK like a Brasilian, not a gringo !

If you are married to a Brazilian national you can stay in the country with no time restrictions whatsoever.
You should make an appointment with the Brazilian Consulate in your region. They have all the information you may possibly need.
