I'm coming to Sofia in a few weeks to start teaching, I was wondering if anybody knew whether I can get a work VISA in Bulgaria or if I have to obtain it in the United States. Thanks for any information you might have.

Hi

We are also travelling to Bulgaria later this year to live and run a businerss. I attach the official wording for work visa's from the Bulgarian Embassy in London:-
Employment: In case the foreigner is employed by a company or institution in Bulgaria, the employer should obtain the work permit from the appropriate department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of the Republic of Bulgaria. Then the foreign person should enclose the original of the work permit to the application for a Long-term Visa (type "D" visa). In Bulgaria he can apply to the local immigration authorities for a residence permit.

If your thinking to stay over 30 days, you must obtain a visa.

You can can exit to neighbooring country on thirtith ( no later ) and comeback for another thirty days. It will cost for Turkey 20 euro's everytime.
The best is to obtain visa from home, If you are U.S., call the Bulgarian Embassy here. they will issue 3 month visa.

They need to see invitation, Health or traveler insurance.
You'll also when arriving, need to register yourself with police, unless you are at a hotel, they will do it.

After 3 months, you will have to be sponsored or marry someone, to stay longer without coming back.

You can apply for visa when you get back to the states, or home, or exit the country by the last datse of visa, and comeback.

You will be issued another 30 days.

You can keep doing this until you find a better way, I'm not sure there is.
I will be moving there soon, by 2006, My wife is Bulgarian.

Where will you Teach ?
