At this time of year, many new expats are living in temporary housing and actively looking for a house or apartment. Choosing the right town or city neighborhood is a big decision. Families, retirees and single expats often look for much different things! To help newcomers in your area narrow down the possibilities, we invite you to post a reply to this thread telling about your town, rural area or city neighborhood. Please begin your post by putting the name of your area/town/neighborhood in capital letters.

Here are a some suggestions for topics that you may want to cover when describing your area:

-- nearby schools? international schols?
-- do many expats live in the area?
-- activities for families or single expats?
-- proximity to city or areas where most expats work?
-- typical housing (sizes, costs, yards/no yards, etc.)
-- parks and recreation areas?
-- nightlife and restaurants?
-- safety and crime issues?
-- do you need a car?
-- basic amenities?

Thanks for helping new expats in your area!

I live in the village of Biser, our nearest city is Haskovo.
We have many schools in Haskovo and most children here will board during the week, going home at weekends.

The area is very close to the Greek Border and 4 hours from Istanbul so its great for people who wish to have a base to travel from.

Because we are so close to the borders the countryside has more of a mediteranean feel to it.

Property can still be relatively cheap to buy in this area. We are 3 hours from the coast and 3 hours from Sofia.

The local cities and towns have the usual amenities, new supermarkets are being built in the town of Harmanli (which is 10 mins from us.)

The area we live in is famous for its production of Merlot Wine, and the vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see.
So its great for wine lovers

Its a quiet place to live, not a great deal of nightlife(clubs) there are a few, there are lovely restaurants and many evenings can be whiled away sampling the local cuisine.

I hope this helps people find their little piece of tranquility, we certainly have
