I recommend you go through Serbia rather than Romania. Although not in the EU they have all the same laws and recognize all EU laws so no extra hassle. The main reason is the roads. Romanian truck drivers are a nightmare and it is small roads about 80% of the way. Serbia is nice motorway all the way to Nis, and then a 90 min scenic drive to the BG border, and another 60 to Sofia. I drive that route about every 3 months, and also do Romania.

But with dogs you are meant to get a special certificate for travel from a municipality vet to travel through Serbia as it is not on the pet passport scheme. I know people that have travelled through with dogs no problem, but know others that have been stopped and charged hundreds for vet checks. We travel regularly with our dogs and would not risk going through Serbia. Romania is fine to drive through, not all motorway although the new motorway does make it much quicker, pretty drive through the villages.

Can you recommend any pet friendly hotels going the Romania passage has I don't fancy going threw the Serbia route, and thanks for your feed back on this post

To be honest we always try and avoid staying in Romania as always found it rather expensive for what you get and food was crap at the hotels. We tend to stay on the Hungary border (there are plenty of places near Mako) and then just over border into Bulgaria around Vidin/Lom.
