Myself and my partner shall be moving to Bulgaria soon and am thinking of starting up boarding kennels. (not for stray dogs). Can anyone tell me if there is a call for it. We already have 2 dogs of our own. Suzy

Depends on area and your prices, already several Brits run boarding kennels, there are 2 or 3 large, well known ones Veliko Turnovo way, couple around Yambol, one in north Bulgaria, one near Varna I think.....and then there are the Bulgarian run dog hotels.
And there are many rules and regulations to abide by for running a boarding kennels with inspections etc.
There are also now quite a few pet sitters to look after animals in your own home, as many people have several pets.

I would imagine it depends on your target market. If you can reach enough expat dog owners, you could probably make good business. However Bulgaria is a poor country, and I doubt they would spend money on kennels (either they leave them with family/friends or are too poor to travel so they dont need a kennel). If you really love the kennel idea I think it would be a hit in Czech Republic, and especially Prague. They are fanatical about dogs there, and spoil them in every way conceivable. most people own there dogs too.

If you don't live in Bulgaria and know about the country, it is better not to comment. Yes it is fairly poor, however many Bulgarians have pedigree dogs and there are a number of expensive dog hotels.
Many expats have dogs and use kennels. However, there are already a number of people doing this, some legal, many not.

Excuse me, "travelbug" but I do live in Bulgaria, and my wife is Bulgarian, so I am speaking from a relatively insider perspective rather then the expat with rose colored glasses. In case you were unaware, Bulgaria is a dynamic country with many different ways of life present in different areas. So please, do not be arrogant enough to think that your experience is the only correct experience. Everything I said is completely accurate for the Bulgaria where I live, and the communities around me.

Maybe and I also know many that live in Bulgaria and have not got their residency cards, but does not make it legal or what you are meant to do.

Sorry the other post posted on the wrong thread.
But still I am not being arrogant. I could say the same about you, you seem to think that what happens in your region of Bulgaria (where ever that may be) is the same for all over. And clearly it is not. Especially in the more affluent places like Sofia, at the coast, around Plovdiv etc. I know many Bulgarians that put their dogs into "dog hotels" when they go away and know many Bulgarians that regularly travel abroad and need pet care. Same with expats.

I never said your information was wrong. Thats exactly the point of a forum. Obviously people are going to have knowledge of their own experiences and areas. Each person posts how it is for them and that gives the person asking the question an overview of numerous viewpoints, opinions, and locations. These are not questions that have a right or wrong answer.
