Forever! You may be dreaming the impossible dream. I doubt that any landlord would commit to a 5-year lease, let alone forever. Or if s/he did, I bet there would be a clause in the agreement saying that s/he could sell the apartment if s/he felt like it.

If you retain a real estate agent to find you an apartment, just tell him/her what you’re looking for and see how s/he reacts. S/he will probably suggest what I’ve got here in Plovdiv: a 1-year lease, extendable indefinitely by mutual agreement. So far it’s been extended three times. There’s never any discussion; I just keep on paying the rent.
