We are in North Central Bulgaria. This will be our first winter so I will give you last winters weather from friends. Up until 27th December there were days when t-shirts were being worn. This was followed by cold and snow with temperatures reaching -20 degrees. It is a dry cold as opposed to the UK cold, grey and windy. Lots of blue skies. I understand that nearer the Turkish and Greek borders winters are less severe but summers very hot. This year we had exceptionally hot June with temps in the late 30's and early 40's. That continued through till August. Right now temps have dropped to 20-25 degrees but a big drop in the evening. We put a quilt on the bed yesterday for the first time.

We live between Yambol and Elhovo in the southeast which is about half an hour drive away from Turkey. My Bulgarian wife has told me that the winters here have changed since she was a child. She said that it used to snow quite a bit but I have been here for three years and we have not had much snow at all. It is cold enough that ice will form on your car windows in the morning if they are not in a garage. Our winters are usually relatively mild but they are sometimes gray and a bit wet. We get more rain in winter than we do in summer. We have only had two good rains in the last three or four months so we must irrigate our large garden...which is very easy and very cheap if you have property with a well.
I spent some time in Tryavna during February and we had some very deep snow on a couple of occasions.
Good luck.
