Hi me and my wife are thinking about moving to Bulgaria from the UK . We will be taking a holiday next year to get a feel of the place . We had found a house but on contacting the local estate agent they have advised against it as its in the village of Gorski Dolen Trambesh and unfortunately its a gypsy village and would maybe be unsuitable . My question is which villages are suitable ? Many Thanks Kev

Hi Kev The issue of gypsy villages keep rearing it's ugly head. There will be gypsies in every village. What you are looking for is a village in which there is equanimity between the Bulgarian, Gypsy and Turkish communities. There are villages that can be described as predominantly gypsy villages. Novo Varbovka springs to mind, Obedinene is another. However there are ex pats living in those villages very happily. We live next to the town of Levski, known to be home to the gypsy kings. Our village of Gradishte has about 6 couples who are permanent residents and another 3 who aren't. But we are a big village and yes there is a gypsy population. We have often left our Land Rover locked overnight, The front door to the house is always open and although our only dealings with the Bulgarian gypsies is if they stop by when selling something. Join The Pavlikeni Post on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/254133881327908/ It is ex pat news for the villages around VT. You can ask if anyone is living in a village and get a first hand viewpoint. I've written a blog covering the finding, buying, selling in UK and moving here. It might be worth a read www.gradishtedream.wordpress.com It is a wonderful life

Hi we have lived in Ivancha village just eat of Polski Trambesh. Rural friendly farming village. 3 English families long term and a few other western Europeans but mostly Bulgarian Families. Happy village lovely people young and old, well worth a look. only know of one Gypsie family well integrated and accepted. Usual passing Gypsie personnel looking for work but no trouble.Take look at houses for sale there with Century Homes in VT, reasonable prices. Best of luck make it an adventure doing the research.. Hi Kev do you and your wife have a plan for what you will be doing here? Retiring, self sufficiency, renovation etc. This will help you to make the right decision. Transport if you are not drivers is an obvious issue. Our village has a bus that leaves the village a 11 and returns at 3 to the neighbouring town. There are train stations nearby but not connectable by bus. Taxi's are cheap but will add up. If you are gardeners you will love the fertility of the land around VT and the availability of plants, once you've mastered their names! If you manage to network enough contacts you might also ask people to look out for houses for sale privately. It is considerably cheaper buying privately and is not a difficult process if you have some help. We've bought 4 houses in all (for the kids too). The first we bought via VT Properties and paid 500 Euros for the fee plus a small notary fee of 70 lev and something similar for paperwork. When we bought the 2nd house we opted to buy privately with the owner via a Notary. Cost was 400 leva plus a 70 leva fee for a translator. It cost a further 40 leva for an Advocat to fill out the paperwork for me to register a house with the council and that's all she wrote! VT Times and Novonite both provide news in English and are a great way to get a feel for a locality - events, news etc

I viewed quite a few before I found Stefan Stombolovo. Love it. My advice visit the villages, narrow them down. Ask people living there already and when you found your perfect place visit again, walk around the village have a few drinks (if there is a bar) make sure you have a shop & internet and bus service...wala..result, or not, but good luck
