Hi,
I've been living in Yangon 2 months now and am eager to create a social network, with other expats living here. I know one other but tend to only meet people traveling through.
I am a English teacher/trainer and generally enjoying my time here, but would be great to meet other like-minded people for conversation, activities, swapping living tips etc..
Get in touch, if your interested! Thanks

Good-day, ESL Trainer!
Just wondering how you were getting on with establishing your network?
I am keen to teach Business English and/or TEFL in Burma and I would be grateful for any suggestions that you might have.
I look forward to meeting you one day soon..
With thanks,
Hamish

Thanks for your post hamish.
Making a few friends, but no expat network as yet.
There are some private education institutes here in Yangon, however I don't see many job adverts. Have you tried the British Council. They maybe able to guide you on this. I know they have English teachers there. Sending your CV directly seems to be the best way.
Myanmar is really opening up , I hope this will create more opportunities in the near future.
Good luck!

Many thanks for the prompt, constructive advice. I envy you on the threshold of historic events in Burma.
History shows that once these movements start they are irreversible - I have seen South Africa, East Germany and China in my adult life... but of all those events the most momentous will be Burma. Not just its strategic position between India and China but because those wonderful, kind, charming people deserve so much better.
I would have intense pride in contributing just a tiny bit to the process. I hope we meet up one day and thanks again for your helpful advice.

Hello, I hope you are finding more friends in Burma. I'm from Burma but I've been living in the States for a bit over a decade. When I was in Burma, there was no such place where expats socialize on a regular basis. At the moment, I don't know how that may or may not have changed. As far as teaching is concerned, British Council and American Center might be very selective and they may have very stringent requirements and the openings may be limited. A native English speaker is always highly sought after for private tutoring.

Greetings, Will visit Burma next month. Am considering taking TEFL class to teach English in Myanmar. Can you share any suggestions on places to visit, class to take, things to know? Did spend a day in Malamyine 2 years ago. Had several chances to visit Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Thank you, Daniel Kallick

Hey there. Yes work is very slow for esl teachers at the moment. It if you can get a job you can get about 1000 usd per month with he right qualifications and you need to be European. Not sure if the changes won't be reversed. That's what we all thought in 1990 when the election was coming!

Like you, I was born in burma - now live in USA. The place check out for ESL (english as a second language) teacher is the catholic schools and church. They have many orphans, and the missionaries teach english and need good teachers.
