Thinking of moving to Burma

New to the Exchange so bear with me.

I'm a Canadian working in civil engineering in Australia as a designer. I'm looking to move to Burma in the next 2 years. I'm at a massive loss to where a good place to move would be and also what are some good websites to get a sense of the country. Been surfing the web quite a bit and I'm thinking I might be at a language barrier. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Since working in foreign countries I find it hard to stop the adventure!

Cheers,

Phillip Meints

I am new to this site myself. I just got back from Burma myself. I am actually from Burma, left home to go to college in the States studying civil engineering.
Burma is very different from a lot of places that I've been to. As you probably know, it's under-developed and needs a lot of work so a civil engineer like you would fit right in. The people there are great though, everybody is really friendly and helpful. I think Yangon is a good place to live because it's the central business area of Burma where you're most likely to find work. Specifically in Yangon, Kamayut near Inya Rd or University Ave is a nice area to live. They also have plenty of apartment style hotels such as Mikasa and Golden Hill Towers. Even though language is barrier, there are also young educated people who speak english and I'm sure pick up some useful phrases in a couple of months. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any specific questions.
I'm personally trying to find a job in Burma so that I can be with my family. You'd think it would be easy speaking fluent Burmese and English, lol! Good luck!

Wow,

To be honest I didn't think there would be any responses, much less in such a short time. Thanks again for the info I took a look and seems like a good place. It also looks like an expensive part of the city. Do you find that there are a lot of civil infrastructure projects on going? I know that now with world investment there should be some new projects being advertised..... My thoughts were that maybe that would be more to the north, However if there are serious new roads programs and development sites there will be, in my prediction a build boom within two years. Any info from "the ground" makes it easier to make an educated choice. As I said in my plan is to get in just before the build boom. Again, thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Phillip,
I agree with you on your prediction about the "build boom". Burmese needs a lot of work done. I haven't been to the new capitol yet but in my opinion, they will need more help in places like Yangon and Mandalay because of the businesses, embassies and population. I know Yangon is not the capitol anymore but people don't see it that way in Burma. Young kids still come to Yangon for better education, job opportunities, plus it's a very old city so I think they will need a lot of improvements there but that's just my opinion. =). It would also be beneficial for you to have some close friends / native Burmese locals that can teach/ help you out with the customs, language, area, etc. (I'm a native and I needed a few days to adjust the last time I went home). I wish I could be more helpful but I left home at young age and it has been a long time. Feel free to send me a message anytime if it's helpful.
