Moving to Canada from UK - where do I start?

Dear All,

My husband and I are hoping to move to Edmonton, Alberta in the next 12-18 months. My Husband is a Class 1 HGV driver with 10 years experience driving Class 1, Class 2 and Low Loader Trucks. I have experience working as a Retail Sales Manager and Trainer. We have 2 dogs and no children... With the hope of expanding our family once we move! Also, I have a cousin living in Edmonton, with her Canadian born Husband. She left the UK around 7 years ago and has since had kids and started her own business as an architect!

Where do we start in terms of planning a move? Do we secure a visa? Do we try to get sponsorship through an employer or my cousin?
We would need to part mortgage a property in Canada should we get approved... Any advice on mortgage rates, lenders or deposits would be appreciated.

Feeling pretty clueless about planning the move - I'll be grateful of any advice you can give. Thanks in advance!

Katy

Best of luck with you move to northern Alberta. Super cold up there so definitely bring lots of winter woolies.

If you go to Canada.ca OR CIC.ca you'll get lots of info re: rules & visas etc.

Hi Katy,

Re. your question on mortgages, the rates have been excellent for quite a while. I keep hearing they will be going up soon, but so far that hasn't happened! See http://bit.ly/1STz0we for a recent media story on housing.

As you're UK to Canada, a good place to start would be HSBC. Other big banks here are RBC, TD, BMO. I always put in a plug for credit unions too as I bank with one.

until the price of oil goes to $70 a barrel you will not see any rise in interest rates. Look at Victoria BC, and up Vancouver Island to Nanaimo. Forget Vancouver, all concrete and no place to park, too crazy. I bank at CIBC as their internet banking website is the best.
