Work culture in Canada

Hi all,

My partner and I are considering a move to Canada. He already has a job offer and I am looking.

We are interested to know the differences in work culture compared to the UK and if possible Sweden (where we live now).

Is it similar to the USA- long hours, hierarchical structure, political? We both work in the tech industry, one of us in development the other in project work.

I know it depends on the organisation and role but if generalisations can be made we would be grateful to hear them :)

Thanks in advance!

I'm Canadian and worked as a career professional in Canada for a decade plus in Provincial Gov't. My observation is the hierarchy is compressed. Everybody is doing equal and valid job as equals working together for a common cause. I was always macro managed and had wide discretion. My hours were long however that was the nature of my work but nothing out of the ordinary for anybody working as a professional with people in a professional capacity.

I took my career to the USA where I was employed for a decade plus for State Gov't and the closest analogy I can give is comparing it to working in a paternal military where everything can and is scrutinized and decisions are made on a micro level.

I get the intent of your question (and it is hard to answer as there are so many variables.)

Overall my observation is Canada is much more laid back in the work place than in the USA but I am talking a gross generalization.

BEST of luck to you :)

A work culture is specific to a company, not a country. While there are some generalities, they really don't mean anything unless the company you join matches those generalities.

So while you can ask the question, there is really no point in getting answers unless you know they will apply to the company you join.

Some people work long hours, some don't. Some managers are more demanding than others, etc. etc. Generalities are meaningless.
