CD citizen moving to Toronto - jobs

I am a US and Canadian citizen. Never lived in Canada but looking to move to Toronto. Have seen many travel shows on this city and it looks fantastic, lots to do and see.
I'm 64 but in good shape. I've applied online from Craigslist ads and never get a reply. I don't know if it's my age of the fact of not living there now, is the reason.
Are jobs for 60'ish people hard to get ?
My background is industrial electrical, mechanical tech, airplane mechanic and mariner.
Any other recommendations of other good cities to live in ?
BC seems just so overly expensive, can't ever see me owning anything there. Are the Toronto suburbs better ?
thanks GUY

Tricky one FloridaGuyInBrasil. There is no doubt your age will go against you in finding work. That's the way of the world. Not being available to work since you are resident yet is also a factor but I think your age is the big issue.

I doubt you will find much of use on Craigslist. If you have some truly specialized skills which it sounds like you may have, then I would say you need to look for specific companies that could use those skills to best advantage and then approach those companies with an offer of your services that takes your age into account from their point of view.

I would say your best bet is to approach companies and offer your services as a self-employed contractor, NOT ask them to look at you as an employee. That removes all the age related issues that they will have with looking at you as a potential employee.

Thanks

I heard too that all their life Canadians hate Americans (even if a Canadian), could be another factor.
Going to Toronto is my next step. Have found some aviation and mariner jobs I'd like to check out.

Any ideas on a weekly or month to month place to stay near downtown ? Not really interested in a hostel.
Hard to find a cheap hotel

I wouldn't put too much stock that ALL Canadians 'hate' ALL Americans. If you're bold and brash and a know it all about everything I'd say you're running a fair risk that ANYBODY in any other country and culture wouldn't like you however if you're just a regular person how would the average Canadian even KNOW you're American (unless you're going to wear your mouth on your sleeve and broadcast it to the world). :) :) :)

I'd follow OldPro advice re: job but keep an open enough mind that Toronto isn't the be all and end all destination in Canada. If you have specific skills you might want to try some of the jobs up North as they're often more open to looking at your skill set(s) than your age.

Best of luck you ya 'eh' ;) ;) ;) (Practice saying it ;) ;) ;) )

I'm in British Columbia. Craiglist is probably your best bet for places to stay.

Well, downtown Toronto and cheap hotels do not go together.

How many of the job opportunities you have identified are actually downtown anyway? I would look at staying in an outlying area near public transport.

For example I see a Travelodge for $64 here:

I also agree that Toronto isn't the only place in Canada you could consider depending on the type of job you are looking at.

Re the attitude towards Americans, I'd say the average Canadian couldn't care less what your nationality is.

Thanks
One big problem is that I don't know where the jobs are and looking at a map I can't figure out how long it takes to get from here to there.
I see Bombardier is up in North York
I think I am better off driving up so I can go anywhere to easily check out all areas vs flying

Driving would definitely make things much easier for job hunting.
