My wife & I are retired living in Florida. Originally from NY state. Getting tired of how things in US are going. Interested in the Victoria,BC area. Is it a hassle for retired US expats?

Tadek54 -= Best city in Canada and the warmest. The whole Capital Regional District is fantastic. Going up Island to Duncan, Cowichan Bay, Ladysmith & Nanaimo, a lot cheaper real estate. If you are well healed, look at Saanichton. Saanich is close to the urban gridlock. Langford, was voted the best municipality in Canada, a suburb. Victoria is choice!

Tadek54 No hassle, just don't brag about being American. Read up on Canadian history, the political parties, the provinces and territories, and the Parliamentary system. Watch Hockey. Pick up the Canadian accent, If someone asks, tell them you are a refugee from the US.

Standupguy, it's fine to be a fan of somewhere but try and get your facts right.

Victoria is NOT the warmest location in Canada. It may be the warmest CITY but the Okanogan Valley is the warmest, driest (note especially that DRY part) climate in Canada. Victoria and Vancouver have the MILDEST climates. That simply means no huge highs or lows in TEMPERATURE and says nothing about precipitation. No region of Canada measures as much precipitation as the west coast of British Columbia. That just might matter to someone looking at moving from Florida.

Scroll down on the following link to 'most rainy days', where you will find Victoria at number 4 for the rainiest cities in Canada.
https://www.currentresults.com/Weather-Extremes/Canada/wettest-cities.php

Now back to the real question here. Just how do plan to obtain the right to live in Canada tadek54? Because unless you can answer that question, nothing else matters.

OP - you are only partly correct. The Okanogan Valley is hot as He-l in the summer. I worked there and know. Then there are the forest fires because it is so dry in the summer destroying thousands of homes and creating a huge tax bill for BC residents. They don't call it the wet coast for nothing. Both a blessing and a curse. I have heard your bias about Ontario, acid rain land. At least the raid on Vancouver Island is Pacific Ocean pure. You are correct in that the average temperature place Victoria numero uno in Canada. Have you been there. It's stunning beautiful and cultured. A great place to live. Langford voted the best municipality in Canada. I'm a wet-coaster in transit to the Philippines where I am m,oving permanently to flee the freezing winters, and grey skies. Nothing beats Pacific Rim Park or Buchart Gardens. Admit it.

OP - looking at your links, did you see Victoria, BC ranked number one as the best city in Canada to live? Okanogan Valley winters are great for skiers. Cars and trucks flipped on slush frozen roads. Some snow conditions are like oil to drive on. Black ice on the shadow side of the mountain/hill as your come around the corner from the sunny dry side. Drove those roads for 17 years. Very dangerous. Vancouver Island's good weather begins after July 10, but May can be beautiful too. Then absolute drought until the last weeks of August. September probably the best weather all year. 19-23 cl. during the day and 12-`14 cl. at night, at least in Nanaimo which is almost as great as Victoria. I'm not putting down the East. I like Ottawa. Terrible winters and muggy summers notwithstanding it's a great city. Toronto people act so superior about their life enclosed in concrete.

LOL, standupguy, your bias is beyond belief. What's more, it seems to be blinding you to reality.

Victoria is a pretty nice looking city, that I'll grant you. But beyond that, it has little to recommend it over other cities in Canada. LIke everywhere else it has its pros and cons.

As for your description of the Okanogan as too hot in summer and good for skiing in winter, well, having LIVED there, I would have to disagree. It can get quite hot in summer but no hotter than Florida where the OP is coming from. It gets very little snow in the actual valley in winter. You have to drive out of the valley to ski anywhere.

Victoria has rain, there ain't no denying it. In sun or snow people can do things. Swim or ski for example. But in rain there is nothing you can do. So rain is the one weather condition that sucks.

Oh and as for swimming in Victoria, well yeah, I suppose people do. How do you like swimming in sewage? Not something I would choose to do personally. LOL
http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/victorias-fight-over-treating-its-sewage-or-keep-pushing-it-raw-into-ocean-as-it-has-for-decades

Victoria's lack of sewage treatment is a national disgrace to which every resident contributes their 'bits' every day.

You can't paint your overly rosy picture of Victoria all you want standupguy but you can't actually change the facts by ignoring them.

OP we agree on some things. Victoria's sewage is sent flowing towards the USA. As for swimming, lost of beautiful ocean beaches all over Vancouver Island, but the water too damn cold unless you wear a wet suit. I swim at the amazing Nanaimo Aquatic Centre where the sauna and steam room are great social hubs. Many friends made there. The wave pool and water slides draw the families. There is a great whirlpool & river where the water jets give you a great massage. There's a great water play area for young children. Ocean not for swimming, only great fishing and diving. There are some beautiful lake front beaches like Westwood lake in Nanaimo with warm fresh water. I'm not debating a "your wrong, I'm right discussion" with you. Just commenting on the beauty of Vancouver Island. Lived in the concrete jungle of Vancouver for 27 years. Pretty ugly place on a cloudy day. Yes it rains more, easier to drive on and less snow to shovel. Great in the other 3 seasons though. Chill out OP. I'm not competing with you, just stating my opinion. Free speech, eh!

Standupguy, ignore the troll, don't feed him even if it is Victoria sewage you want to feed him. LOL

I had trouble understanding why you were addressing what sounded like comments you would address to me but were addressing to OP. You do realize that OP is the accepted short form for 'Original Poster'.

I make it a point to always address people by the name they have provided as I was taught that is the polite and correct thing to do. In your case that is standupguy. In my case that is OldPro. Or you may call me Sir if you like. There is no accepted short form for OldPro. I don't address you as SUG.

As for rain vs. snow, to me that isn't even debatable. You can do some things outside in snow. You can't go and do anything outside while it is raining. Snow is always preferable to rain.

You would do better sticking to 'warmest city' as that is the only real plus you can point to. Even the average temperatures year round are not worth debating.

The range of averages for Victoria go from 3.4C in January to 16..2 in July.
The range in my neighbourhood goes from -4.9 in January to 22.1 in July.

http://www.yr.no/place/Canada/British_Columbia/Victoria/statistics.html

http://www.yr.no/place/canada/ontario/leamington/statistics.html

So while you can argue you don't get as cold in the winter months, you will also have to concede you don't get as warm weather in the summer months.

Vancouverites and apparently as least one Victorian (you) always want to talk about snow and always want to ignore rain. But where do we find Vancouverites in January, at Whistler skiing in the snow. LOL

As I said, it's fine to be a fanboy of Victoria but you can't change the facts or LEAVE out the inconvenient facts.

By the way standupguy, the real argument against snow is really only about 'driving to work'. For those who still have to work for a living, it can be a pain.

But it depends also on how prepared to deal with it a place is. I always remember flying into Vancouver once and the pilot coming on the speaker to announce, 'Vancouver traffic is at a standstill folks, so don't expect to get downtown very quickly. They have had 2 inches of snow overnight.'

He wasn't joking, but the fact is, Vancouver has a very low snow removal budget and so if they do get any snow, they are slow to deal with it.

Now contrast that with this video from Toronto.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUds1pWKMjs

By my count, that's 24 snow plows passing. I'm not sure if Vancouver (or Victoria) even have that many snowplows.

OldPro - Sir - you may call me Old Goat. To clarify, I have lived in Nanaimo for 23 years. Before that 27 years in Vancouver. I was 'force relocated ' to Nanaimo by my federal government employer (yuk) who after 4 years closed their office there and I commuted to Vancouver on the ferry and bus for 11 years when I wasn't doing their heavy lifting in the North. Snow...15 foot walls of it on either side the highway there. It took me three years to adjust to living in Nanaimo. I would never move back to Vancouver or Victoria, One, I can't afford it. All houses in Vancouver over 1 mil. even in bad neighborhoods. Victoria close behind. Nanaimo is strung out along Mother Natures beauty and is drought stricken in the summer (July-Aug.), temperatures reaching over 33 cl. some days, but over 24 cl most days, a very different picture from your link showing Victoria climate. The Artic outflows over the Fraser Valley cross the Georgia Strait (64km) creating what are called Snow Streams. I have had to shovel my property 5 times some days when these blizzards hit. Everyone prays for the rain-melt waiting for temperatures around 5-7 cl. Ton's of snow where I live. Finally the snow disappears with the rain melt. Those wanting snow go to Mt. Washington which gets much better snow conditions than Grouse Mt, Seymour Mt. Black Mt (the North shore of Vancouver) or Whistler which most days is fogged in. Besides the mountain passes on the mainland are only for the very rich. Whistler is 2 1/2 hours by car from Vancouver and is frenzy like Vancouver. One big concrete bunker, but on top of Blackcomb Mt., when the sun is out, magnificent. Mt. Washington is 1 hour from Nanaimo where housing is 1/3 the cost of Victoria or Vancouver, but jobs are scarce. Port Alberni is 20% cheaper for better homes, but you got to go over Mt. Arrowsmith to get to the Ferry or Airport (too out the back-jack for me). Victoria has an International Air Port. My brother flies direct from Tempe, Ariz rents a car and arrives 1 hr. & 15 min of driving over the Malahat Mt. Courtney is a beautiful city, just a bit too far up island, wetter and colder too. Departure Bay ferry (Nanaimo) to Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) is 1 hr. and 50 min. Then 40 min. by bus to downtown Vancouver. Take the Sky Train from there to anywhere in Lower Mainland. BC Ferry walk on is affordable. Taking your car r/t is $127. Since I am an old goat, I walk on for $8 and the blue bus (West Vancouver) is $2.00. The call it a "concession" fare. I never go to Vancouver or Victoria. Nanaimo has everything anyone ever needs or wants. North of Nanaimo is colder/wetter - not my cup of tea. Nanaimo is an old WWI, coal town. Has druggies, Hell's Angel's, very wealthy folk who own houses with stunning views of Howe Sound and almost warm salt water beaches in one location, but Westwood Lake is super for jogging or swimming. The islands around Nanaimo, like Gabriola or Mudge have lots of year round residents. Gabriola has ferry from downtown Nanaimo. Up Island, Denmain and Hornby Island near Comox are spectacular too. Real hippies there, but outsiders are cold shouldered. Not enough of a water table there. Nanaimo has excellent water, better than bottled, and lots of it. I love Vancouver Island. I am sure there are other old goats love their home towns as well. Canadian taxes suck most of my pension. I am parting from Canada permanently in a year to live in my beautiful tropical digs in the Philippines with my Pinay Asawa. The quality of my life doubling there and the Filipina's are incomparable to any North American gals. I'm not knocking you Old Pro, just offering another perspective. to each their own, Ta!
