wanting to buy self sufficient farming land in south western Chile. west of Los Muermos. we figure to be part time for the first 3 years or so. perhaps 6 mo / 6 mo. then full time. primary goal is to grow as much of our own food as possible. have experience in off grid living. we will be heading back down there in March for 4 to 6 weeks.

how many acres are you looking to acquire? My wife and I are currently selling our home and business in New Jersey. We never got south of Futrono, but we really enjoyed those areas. We made friends with a wonderful family from Osorno that had over 200 acres 30 mins from Panguipulli. I am currently applying for English teaching jobs in southern Chile to help us get our Visas and our foot in the door while we rent and look around to purchase property.
My wife and I also are very interested in a self sustainable lifestyle. We are very interested in organics as well and hope to keep in touch with you as we both progress in our journeys toward paradise!

We are looking to do the same . Would be nice to find 60-100 acres at 800 - 900 per acre and split into 2-4 different owners . With like minds building out a sustainable community and sharing skills . I am a 30 year builder developer with a farming background. Seeking a organic non GMO life .

this is starting to sound possible. i myself am convinced that this is the only area of the world where i would want to live. facts: in Chile, on a tourist visa you can buy land just as if you were a local. in Chile on a tourist visa, you can start your own business, with very little paperwork and no minimum buy in that most countries have. joe

My family and I are moving to South America in the beginning of June and are looking to to do the very same thing. Live off-grid grow and raise our own food ad provide our our own electricity through solar and wind. Very cool stuff! Ive been looking in to building with earthbag construction from cal-earth.com also there is an Canadian company that sells rolls a little cheaper. Would love to hear what ideas you've come up with for yourself.

My wife, 2 youngest boys and I have similar aspirations. We are visiting Chile in May for a week and hope to move there by the end of the year (live in Florida currently). We'll be selling our home and businesses. Would love to meet some expats when we visit in May.

I am interested also, from texas, I may be there soon. Cons: You have to do a border run every 90 days if you don't have a job there. Can't open a bank account there either. Pros are many. Do you have some knowhow to live offgrid? I don't but I do have investment funds. Have you heard about galt's gulch? It's outside of Santiago, large libeterian community, same ideals but 60k per lot.

We are also looking for land partners in Chile. Looking to get into permaculture type farming, sustainable living. Basically just some good old fashion country living and hard work. Have not visited yet, but are in the process of selling our home.

Check out land in Santo Domingo area. Land is less expensive than SanTago and air much cleaner near the coast. Many there are earning money from the palta (avacado) orchards in the region. I understan most of the labor is provided by the buyers. Headed there at this moment....

We're interested in the possibilities of Chilean self-sustained living as well. Currently in the White mountains of NH country side. We're interested in Chile and not afraid of some good country living, mixed with some healthy work. We're in our 40's with two children. We have some $ to work with. We're team players and my mrs has a green thumb. I'm handy with tools, building, plumbing and do-it-yourself living. Spent most of my career in IT. We've been exploring options for a few years now. We haven't planned travel dates just yet, but are in discussions about them.

hello again everyone. sorry i have not posted in a while. i had to postpone my 2914 trip to Chile because of health issues. we are currently planning to do the Chilean summer there, starting sometime in January 2015 and returning to the US in late April. our iteneray is to spend the first week with friends west of Temuco. next: go to Los Muermos for at least a week, perhaps longer investigating the land west of there towards the ocean. also heading south west out of Los Muermos, down to the end of the mainland. next will be investigating land north east of Puerto Montt, on the highway heading east. followed by circling by highway by bus to the big fiord south west of Puerto Montt. there are two towns there we want to investigate that are on the bus route and at the end of the bus route. we also want to investigate Palena, Chile and Chile Chico. because of their microclimates. if you are planning to be incountry then, meeting up is a possibility.
thanks again for responding and hope to hear from you.

We will be in Chile for a week or so, maybe longer, January 10th or thereabouts. Thanks for the mention of those towns as were thinking of staying in Valparaiso or nearby places. Santiago doesn´t sound too appealing as a holiday place.............keep in touch. Jim and Lesia in Buenos Aires, Argentina

to PanamaJames: hi Jim Lesia, i am glad you are coming to Chile. since you responded to my post, i must assume you are looking at country land (el campo). most of the place areas that i listed are either that, or small towns surrounded by campo. most of what i am looking at this trip is down in the bottom of the lakes district. they have enough rain their to have year round lush green pastures. this is my primary consideration in this time of global warming and every one running out of water. so these areas i hope are really nice in the summer, but do expect a lot of rain in the winter. thanks again and hopefully our paths will cross. joe and kate

Yes, I am looking at Chile as a possible retirement location and the farmland idea sounds great. So far Uruguay and Argentina don´t suit my needs, so looking forward to Chile Jan 10th for a week or so. Just starting to look for places to stay. If you wanted to tell me more about your Chile adventure, please email me at panamajames@gmail.com

It seems there are many of us favor both the idea of self sustaining organic food supply and coming together for mutual support.
I'm not sure about trying to form more tight knit communities such as Galt's Gulch and Freedom Orchard. I'd prefer a little more loose knit where we're not tied together by ideals, but simply on mutual support and the larger ideal of growing your own good food.
The problem comes with location, and getting a loose knit community in a more or less common location.
What's important to you about location? Rate the following categories on relative importance on a scale of 1 to 10:
Warm climate: Plentiful water: Access to a city with plenty of goods and services: Distance from highly dusted / GMO crops: Protection from Tsunamis: Close to Beach: Close to Mountains: Existing houses available: Anything I forgot?

I like the idea of fertile land, plentiful water and autonomy within a like minded community. I do not want to be too close to my neighbors as I am tired of that living in suburbia. Having university nearby and services and infrastucture is important to me as I have several children. Otherwise I prefer myear round growing season and with enough elevation to get a breeze preferably on east side coastal mountains near to beach.
