Moving to teach English with husband and two year old

My daughter wants to get certified as a TEFL teacher and move to Chile with her family. This is almost all of my family leaving from the US and she has always gotten homesick just a few hundred miles away. How difficult will this be for them? What about buying a home?

Excellent Idea! I'm in the process of doing the same thing. Chileans who are over 30 mostly have not learned English in school. All younger Chileans are bi-lingual in Espanol and English as a requirement for graduation from High School. There is a Chilean government program called "English Opens Borders" that is desperately looking for native English speakers who can teach English to those in business that aren't bi-lingual. They understand that English can expand their businesses beyond the Espanol speaking countries and enhance their trade with non-Espanol speaking countries. Look at the city that you are interested in moving to and contact the larger businesses in that city for leads. I'll be moving to Iquique in northern Chile early next year. I just returned from a trip there and found that the climate is ideal and cost of living about half of what it is here in the states. You'll also find that Chileans are very welcoming to Americans and always have a smile and respectful attitude. An amazing country and people. They even actually enforce their laws (what a concept) and there is absolutely NO violence. Only the military and carabineros (police) have guns. A very peaceful people and have a great work ethic. Not an entitlement attitude as here in the USA. They just held their own 4 year elections and the conservatives almost unanimously won all the country's elected offices. You are welcome to respond to me if you have any more specific questions that I may be able to help answer for you.

Thank you so very much for the information. I have forwarded it to my daughter. I'm sure she has a few questions for yoy. She recently spoke with a gentleman in Chicago that trains TEFL students all over and told her a bit about Chile. He told her that her income would not be enough to sustain them, that it would barely cover her costs. She is going in March probably to train. With her husband and two year old. She is only 23 years old but really wants to try it!

Thank you again!

Kimberly
