Hello out there! My husband''s new job is relocating our family (three daughters) to Beijing in September. Any info out there reguarding life in China for Americans? Unsafe? Any western-type grocery stores? Can I buy Kraft cheese sticks and Farley''s Fruit Roll-ups? We''ve spent 3 years in Saudi Arabia where women are repressed and it''s hot as hades! Looking forward to Beijing--I guess! Lisa

" Just arrived one week ago. Things here are quite modern and progressive from what I have seen. My fiancee is here with me and she is originally from Beijing, though it''s changed much in the 9 years since she left and had become a US citizen. She makes life much easier for me because we work near each other and she can tell the taxi where to go and help me understand how to get things done here. I find life relatively safe except for the roadways/driving conditions. They are fun if you like total chaos but less so if you prefer orderliness and turn signals, let alone the predictability that ""ONE WAY"" means just that, as opposed to being a loose suggestion. "

" Hi Lisa, I''m sure there are Western groceries in Beijing. Not sure you''ll find Kraft products. Cheese is hard to come by in the part of China I''m in (Fuzhou). You''ll find the Chinese very friendly and helpful. I hear that the fall is the nice time of the year in Beijing. I was there last November, better pack warmer clothes than Saudi Arabia. I find China to be very safe. Watch out for petty crime, pick pockets and such but major crime is rare against foreigners. Write if you have more questions. Keep in touch and good luck. Ken "

" Beijing is generally safe especially for foreigners. Your best bet is to live at the Holiday Inn Lido Apartment complex (I do). It has good accomodation, an international school and grocery store all in one location. Check out www.beijingscene.com for more information. "
