My wife and I are looking for some help on visa types etc. We plan on moving to Guangzhou in a couple of months and wonder what most Expats in the area do for Visa's? I have been to China many times but only get a tourist visa for 30 days. Do most people get these shorter Visas and just constantly re-new etc.? We will be opening a rep office for my company in 3 months after we arrive. Will this help us get a yearly visa? Thank you for all your help!

Until you have a legitimate, registered business in China, you really can't get a residence visa (one year). You are pretty much stuck with 1-3 month visas...on the bright side, being in Guangzhou, it is relatively easy to go to Hong Kong to get new visas when needed.

There is one option that you may want to pursue...there are some visa consulting companies which can help you get a one year visa by "inviting" you to work for their company. This is one of those gray areas...you do not actually work for them, you just pay them a fee to tell the government that they are employing you. Once you set up your rep office, you then change the info so that your visa is under your new company's name.

For more info on this kind of option, just type "visa consulting, china" into any search engine (google, yahoo, etc.)

There are really two ways to set yourself up in valid living and working status in Guangdong Provice.

One, is purchasing real estate, which may be a good idea if you'll be here a long time, but the market here does not appreciate like in the West. So don't consider it an investment opportunity.

The second is the Rep Office you mention. This can be fully implemented in quite a short time and should not require anything more than a single entry 30 day visa for your first entry.

But there is a bit of preparation one might want to do in their home country on a Rep Office. In fact that is one of the things I do here in China.

As this is not a commercial forum, my personal email is "syl6161@yahoo.com" if you'll need some more details on that.

Your mention of trips to Hong Kong for renewal is a common practice, but may prejudice your future business. So, while they may be a short term option, it should not be considered a long term option.

This is so, because when you set yourself up in business here with a Rep Office and submit your foreign passport full of Hong Kong renewals, it can draw unwanted attention to your otherwise easily approved application.

So, either do not use consistent renewals, or get a new passport issued before filing for a Rep Office.
