We are a family of 6--kids aged 18, 12, 10 and 3--with a probable move to Chengdu sometime in 2004. We previously spent a year in Dalian, 1998-1999, loved it and are excited at the chance to go back, but need some details about life in Chengdu so we can properly prepare. Thanks for your help!

I know of Chengdu only from a vacation my family and I took there while we were living in Tianjin. The city is very nice, clean and has lots of trees. We visited a wonderful tea house in the People's Park - you can get your ears cleaned there for cheap! (Quite an experience.) The food is fantastic but we love Sichuan cuisine. We also travelled to see the Big Buddha in LeShan and saw the pandas in the preserve that is located within Chengdu - both were great experiences. Good luck with your move.

Beware of Chorlea there in the outskirts. A roommate went hunting for Pandas and camp out and was laid up in the hospital for 5 weeks and $180 USD.

The people are firey and enthocentric and are great to be with.

Hi! We're a U.S. family of four with a daughter (15) and son (11) in Chengdu. Write with your questions. There are some expat families, a fledgling international school, and you can get just about anything--even cheese ;-) What we don't have is sun--it's in the bottom of a bowl with cloud cover about 97% of the time. Traveling in the Tibetan areas in the mountains west of us is one of the best things about living here. Feel free to call us at 8736 7165 when you arrive.

Dear Searles Family,
Thank you for responding to our message. We have had two other kindly replies but there is nothing quite like hearing from another MOM!! What a blessing. We will not know for sure if we are coming to Chengdu until sometime after the middle of April, but, if we DO get to come we will need to be ready to leave by mid-July so I am doing research and listmaking NOW as there will not be much time later.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Dalian--you learn LOTS and LOTS about your family's strenghths and weaknesses while living in a place like China!!--and are excited about the possibility of spending 1-2yrs. in another part of China. Our oldest daughter will turn 19 soon and is planning to come along with us and do some internet university classes so as not to delay her schooling by a year. Our next is a 12yr. old boy who is just embarking on that somewhat daunting "path of puberty"--my mother lovingly refers to it as "Getting up over Fool's Hill"!!. He's a good boy and as we homeschool we've been able to avoid much of the more negative aspects of too much peer pressure, but we are definitly excited for him to have many service opportunites in China that will of course be different from anywhere else. Our 10 yr. old daughter is a sweetie who has mixed feelings about leaving her dear friends behind, but remembers enough about our previous China year to be excited about the "adventure". Lastly we have a 4yr. old son who has ALWAYS had a great affinity for Asian people and would coo and play with them as a baby when he wouldn't let ANYONE else NEAr him except family!! We think he will do just fine!
We are planning to send a very small shipment ahead this time instead of traveling with so much baggage. Mostly books and school supplies but I was also thinking of some other things such as : basic canning supplies--in Dalian we would see fresh fruit and vegetable for about 2 weeks, when they were in season, and then no more of that type for the rest of the year. I thought then," it would be great to be able to can some of this produce so we can have apple pie at Christmas, salsa, etc..."
I wonder if Chengdu has a more consistant supply of basic fruits and vegetables? Also, with 2 daughters and myself, I wonder if we need to bring a supply of feminine protection or if there is a good varity available at reasonable prices?
I read somewhere that the quality of bed linens and towels is quite poor in that area? We don't require anything fancy, but it does need to be durable. What has your experience been?
Lastly, if we are able to come, what can we bring/ship to your family?!?!? Last time we had friends in Shanghai who begged for Little Debbie snacks!! We would be happy to bring ANYTHING you'd like, either with us or in our shipment.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
p.s. I'm really not sure how this forum thing works, is there a way we can communicate directly without putting our private email out for everyone to see?? I hope so!
