Hi, I'll be moving to SuZhou soon and would be great if someone can advise on the following package and whether I would survive there.
1. RMB 16000 per month net after tax 2. Accomodation Covered 3. Transport Covered 4. Air Tickets for travelling back and forth
Also please kindly advise what is the standard cost of living in SuZhou. Items would include the basic food , internet service, pay-tv and standard entertainments.
I am also considering to hire an in-house maid. Please kindly advise how much per month (RMB) ?
All this is very exciting for me.
Thanks!!!

At $2000 USD a month you are doing quite well and should save with the paid accommodations about $1500 a month. Su Zhou is about an hour by rail from Shanghai ("Sung Hi as the locals pronounce.) It should be better to live there than commute.

I looking at an option to work in the Suzhou Industrial park. Is it realistic to think about living in Shanghai and commuting? Whats the deal with buying a car?
Living in Singapore is 'very easy' for a westener, any idea how Shanghai and or Suzhou compare?

For young single person, the terms you quote seem most adequate
As to costs: see my book "Living and Working in China" (published by How to Books, December 2004) available via Amazon, including a whole chapter dedicated to employing drivers and maids
Given the proximity to Shanghai (within commuting distance), use Shanghai figures as a guide

It is possible, but not ideal, to commute between Suzhou and Shanghai. A colleague of mine did it, working weekdays in Shanghai, and spending weekends in Suzhou with his family. Eventually, however, they all moved to Shanghai
If you wish to pursue, I may be able to put you in touch with him via my "guanxi" - of which I ask only that you observe the rules
As to not only buying but also driving your own car: see the relevant chapters on Transport and Drivers in my book "Living and Working in China (How to Books, 2004) available via Amazon. There are restrictions for foreigners
From my fleeting acquaintance with Singapore, I would say it compares favourably with Shanghai. As a much travelled UK expat, I still think Shanghai today leaves most European cities standing. So you should find living there pretty easy
Try one of the web sites for expats in Shanghai - such as: shanghaiexpat.com
