Hi guys

I am moving to Beijing in March 2006 to help work on the Olympic construction/preparations.

My main concern is that (I will have a company sponsored visa) can my girlfriend come with me?

Also, can I get English language Satellite channels? I have looked at Star and believe this reaches China but it has VERY limited channels!

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Stuza, my man, I've never looked at english language television in China so I can't offer any news on that subject hough you surely can take your girlfriend to China. You need L visa, single or multiple entry. It ranges in price from around $50 to $100 or so, depending on how many entries you want. Look on www for PRC Consulate or Chinese Embassy or similar search terms.

You sure you want to take your girlfriend to China? You could be under a good bit of stress, what with work in a thoroughly unfamiliar place and other pressing local conditions. Could a good idea to leave her close to the home fire and drop in for visits from time to time.

I'm looking for something to do in Beijing. Does your company have need for more help? If so, please advise me about what sort of work is needed and who to contact.

my best ........

Re your move to Beijing:

(1) Whether or not your girlfriend can accompany you will depend on her obtaining a visa. Whether or not she can live with you is another question and may depend on how broad-minded or not the authorities are in a country where strictly speaking co-habiting outside marriage is a crime. This may explain why some multi-nationals insist that their expats are married to their trailing partners

(2) English-speaking TV channels are plentiful (cable and satellite), depending on the complex where you live

If you and your girlfriend are a de facto couple, you may be able to get her a dependant spouse visa (which is one of the best visas to be on). This usually requires a letter stating that your relationship is de facto by your home government body. Find out who is helping your company organise your visa in Beijing, and ask them about it.

Otherwise, there are different visa that are easy to get, but some may require her to leave the Mainland every 6-12 months to renew her visa (whereas a dependant visa does not require this).

None of this is a problem is the short answer...

IF you need help getting STAR or any other English TV channels in Beijing, contact me directly, better before you agree to take a certain apartment, it does matter what direction you face.

IF you need help with JOBS/VISAS/HOUSING or anything else in Beijing, I'm your man.

I'm running a job fair for a State Dept of China for Foreigners only, and I live here also, so i'm glad to answer any of these questions.

Hello, I hope the response is not too late. My husband and I lived in Beijing for a year while he worked for the US government. We were not married when I first arrived. We did live together for 30 days and then got married in Beijing. We got all of our information from the US embassy so I'm pretty confident that it is accurate. An American citizen who is not sponsored by an employer can stay in China for 30 days on the initial tourist Visa. BEFORE the 30 days expire you must go to Chinese authorities and request an extension (this is usually granted with no hassle but dont wait until the last minute)- this can be granted for up to 90 days and then your girlfriend will have to leave the country. As for living together being illegal, the Chinese don't do it but we did not have any problems. If you live among the Chinese, just dont tell people you are not married. We lived in a serviced apartment where most tenants are not locals. Regarding satellite TV, it depends on where you live. We lived in Chaoyang district and had lots of satellite channels.
