I can bring my cell phone (blackberry) from the US but the charges will be sky high! Does anyone use a local service and what is best cell phone out there (in China) and what about language (English) issue?

Also, has anyone used the emergency "011" for translation concerns w/police or other situations?

I know that you can purchase monthly service agreements with China Mobile - I haven't checked into it lately so they may have better english service than they did. I actually just bought a china mobile SIM card and then purchase top-up cards at 100rmb each - I don't make many calls so this works for me. Both can be purchased usually at the little corner stores. The top-up cards have instructions in English - just wait until the chinese instructions finish.
However, these SIM cards will not work outside of China so if you want roaming capabilities, it is probably best to check into the service packages.
I use SKYPE for all my long distance calls but of course have to do this from my computer.

I use China Mobile. The sim is 70rmb so with 30 added for time the start is 100 rmb. What I want to point out is that you can usually only buy cards in the city you bought the sim in. It is possible that it will work in the province but I know that if I am in San Ya and need time I have to have my wife buy it in Chengdu where we live and where I bought the chip. The long / short. If you intend to travel but the chip at the most central point and buy enough time to last. They just cut the roaming charged by 50% so calling is cheap. but if you end up buying more than 1 chip you are throwing away 70 rmb each time.
