I have been offered a teaching post in Xining City, Qinghai Province - does anyone know any thing about the area and what it would like for an english person to live there, I've heard it's cold, grim and very cut off - has anyone anything nice to say about the place

Hello from a fellow "Soon To Be ExPat" I am unfamiliar with the area you are going but would like to suggest you get (if you don't already have one) a hand held translator device. I just got mine and it is going to be a sanity saver! We are also going to be in an area where there aren't any ExPats close. There are several options out there - I got mine from Aim High, Inc. at www.aimhi.com and we ordered item AM101 w/WordPoint @ $179.99 USD Good luck and try to stay positive ... another bit of advise I recently received is once you/we get there - build a close friendship with two local chinese and in time this relationship will be priceless and open doors that would not necessarily open. :-)

There are lots of translators out there from fantastic to crap. The most important thing to consider, other than it's ability to correctly translate, is the screen size and backlight. Don't buy the one that "fits easily in a shirt pocket". When I went for a long stay in Colombia I bought one of these and it worked fine on a table with office lighting. But how likely are you to have this scenario? In any other lighting it was poor and in a restaurant or any dimly lit place it was completely useless. The one I have here my wife bought in china and it is the best I have ever used by far. The only problem is that all of the brand name is in Chinese so all I can read is the model V650, Oh I also see that is was passed by inspector #7. The serial number starts with HP. If anyone is interested I will get it translated. Good luck on the job try "Google Earth" to see where it is and what kind of terrain, local points of interest and comments from other travelers.
