My wife and I visited China for a month last year and used the ATM for cash. My bank Bank of America had an agreement with Commercial Bank so there was no ATM fees involved. For larger amounts we wire transferred to a friends account but for the most part going to the ATM got us thru for the month. Check HSBC. They have branches in USA and mainland China.

You will have to wait till you get to China to open your account. They need you in person with your Passport and resident permit to open your account. If you plan to send a transfer from America, open your account at Bank of China in NY abd set up the working there before you come to China. Then you can contact them to transfer every month or when ever you want to your new bank in China. I suggest you pick up Magicjack and set it up before you come for free calls to America. It works. Gives you a local American number they can call you back if need.
