Buying a car in China

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are planning a long term (4+ month) period to spend in China. We will be coming in on Tourist (L) visas with 120 day entries. We would like to do the following:

1. Stay in a homestay somewhere in Southern China in a not-big city for a month
2. While there get a domestic driver's licenese (we have read about the nightmare of doing this)
3. While there buy a used van and put a stove/bed in it and drive around the country

We are trying to find out as much as we can about buying a used car in China. It looks like we can get a driver's license on a tourist visa, but I can't find out good info on buying/registering/insuring a vehicle.

Does anyone have experience with this? I am also curious about the option of getting a HK driver's license in HK (where we will enter from the US) and transferring it to a Chinese one, thus skipping the exam.

Thanks,
Matt

Sounds like me 2 years ago. I have been here 8 years. The Chinese drivers lic. took me two trys to get about 90 on the computer test. They did not have an English book for me to study. Used vans are 12-18,000rmb higher for 1.2-1.4 moters. Driving in China is not like the states, to many e bikes and 3 wheel carts. Roads in the country are always being worked on and the hwy cost alot in tolls. If you have a friend in China maybe can find you someone to stay with. Have you ever been to China? I live with my wife in Nanning, Guangxi China. To much to write here, but if I can help let me know. Michael
