Hi all, have you ever heard the new phrase Lao Ya ?? Which means an Old Asian Friend but has similar pronunciation with an Old Duck or Old Crow? Can this phrase be used to counter the phrase Lao Wai in negative connotation? Thanks in advance.

I never thought lao wai had a negative connotation, it's a descriptive term for exactly what we are, foreigners. I have several Chinese English teacher friends and they seem puzzled that western people seem offended by lao wai and on several occasions, I have been questioned by them about this. There is another term for foreigner that is offensive but it's not lao wai, now I will admit that for some elderly persons, there is some resentment toward all foreigners.
