I will be returning to Colombia after many years in US, does anyone knows if they applied law 1565 Plan Retorno? that states: Returnees are exempt from all taxes and import duties levied on entry into the country of the following goods: a) Household goods up to two thousand four Units Tax Value (UVT 2400), $ 35,000 dollars. Which international shipper is better? Thanks

I moved back to Medellin after 50 yrs out. I got a certificate from the Consulado as proof to be a RETURNING colombian, and they only charged me 15%tax. It is normally 30%. That is the benfit they offered me with the Plan Retorno.. Th.is was just 15 months ago

when I moved 4 years ago , I did not pay anything for my hiusehold ,not a penny except the moving charge of course. Just go to your neares consululate in the States and get a letter says that you are moving permanently to Colombia and give it to your mover that is it.

Thank you for your reply. Could you please tell me the name of your mover and if you rented a container. What fees did you have to pay to the mover besides the shipment? Was your move door to door and included all transfers? I really need the information as I don't know if it is worthy to take my stuff. the furniture I see are not nice and the nice styles are super expensive. Thanks so much. Please help

Thank you. Was that 15% of the value of your items? or the fee pay to move? How do you calculate a value or use item like furniture and personal items? Do they ask for invoices for old /used stuff? Was the 15% tax or customs' fees? Who was your shipper? I appreciate it.

My experience was that any dollar figure you provide is accepted...they do not question anything if you have a receipt, which is easy to create in Word.

To enretiro. If this refers to my post, the 15% was the IVA tax applied to my personal belongins based on the valued I declared. Not everything I brought was used, but I declared what I thought it was worth. No one questioned my estimates. But the companies involved in the moving took me to the cleaners. Nothing you can do when they have posession of your stuff. Next time I will have all estimates in writing b4 moving.

Hi suadel, what papers did you have to present to the consulate to get the letter or certificate for the taxes? Do they classify your return? I read the law stated 4 types. I jus want to go back. Thank you.
