My husband and I will be taking the ferry from Panama to Cartagena, Colombia. From there we will driving across the country to enter into Ecuador. Which is the safest route to take? Are there any toll roads that are best to take? Are there any safety issues with the Panamerican Hwy? Thanks for your help!

I am VERY CURIOUS about your trip! It was always my dream to drive from Canada to Colombia... and still might drive to Canada from Colombia...but was always confused about the ferry leg....and the safety. I look forward to the responses!

Hello Suchitoto,
What a great adventure! I have made this same trip several times and used several different routes.
First a couple of questions? Are you in a car or motorcycle and what kind car or motorcycle is it?
What is your time frame?
Are you looking for the fastest route or most interesting route?
I will be happy to help you out.

We will be driving a nissan car and we're a little flexible with time, but not much. We would rather be driving through something interesting, but if it was only safe. Can you provide both routes, interesting & fast please? Maybe that way we can determine how flexible we are and how much time it would put us out or save us. Also, if you could tell me a little bit about the pros/cons. Thank you so much!

Suchitoto, a little nissan car? Are you comming through Central America? Is this car 4 wheel drive?
Making a route is a big job, takes me a while to put together. I need more information from you, like where you are comming from and where you are going.
Do you camp, what is your budget?
Do you have a month, a week?
Why are you doing this? Do you speak Spanish, do you have experience in 3rd world countrys.
Give me more to work with and you will get back more than you give.
Martin

Hi Martin, we're driving a truck and it has 4 wheel drive. We're picking up the car in Cartagena, and continuing through Colombia to Ecuador for work purposes. We have camp gear, but not sure if we want to use it in Colombia. We're both fluent in Spanish & yes, we have maps. We've done drives like this before through different parts of S. America, but first time in Colombia. We only have a little bit over a week to work with in order to get to our final destination. I hope this helps

Suchitoto, I ha e what I need and will get working on your route this afternoon.
When are you going to be leaving Cartagena?
I am assuming that given your limited time, you are not interested in spending time in any one place to see the sights.
I have a special route in mind for you that will knock your socks off and avoid most of the truck traffic. The sceanery is just beautifull and the roads are for the most part in very good contition.

Hi Martin, we're planning to be there in 2 months. You're right, our journey through Colombia will unfortunately be just touch & go. We hope to at least see some nice places to spend some nights & hopefully return to Colombia one day with more time. Thanks for your input & look forward to hearing your routes. Take care

Suchito - I sent you your rout by private message. See if it arrived. Please feel free to post any questions on line, just not the route in full.
Have a fun and safe adventure. Be careful.

Hi Martin, thank you for putting so much time into this. I really didn't expect a personal planner, so thank you for being so detailed in your directions. We will be alert in all our driving in order to enjoy what Colombia has to offer. Best to you.
