I have visited a couple of job posting site and I am not impressed. Does anyone have an idea of who or where to look. Teaching is not out of the question especially if the school is looking for someone to teach a math or science class in English. All thoughts are welcome

It takes time and contacts, finding jobs through people. The only way I found my jobs down here is because I knew someone, or the manager, or the owner, etc. Takes time.

Hmmm, whilst I respect your wish to find work, and I hope you find something good, I must say that that it may not be easy to find well paid work.

There are many people who look for teaching positions. Great if you can find something, but most of the top schools that pay top money, do require highly qualified and experienced teachers, with appropriate degrees, teacher training and subject training too. Quite understandable, when you consider that parents who pay US$ 5,000 a month per child are not going to be happy with unqualified people teaching their kids.

Otherwise, you are left with the lower grade jobs, which may be a lot less money than you need to survive here in Colombia. There are millions looking for work, and so on the basis of supply and demand, the wages are often around minimum wage rates. (COP$ 600,000 a month, whereas your rent may well be more than the wage you earn). Yes, the standard of teaching in those lower grade jobs is very poor, and you being a native speaker should be more desirable, but supply and demand still rules the wage.

Maybe in your own career of engineering, if you have good qualifications, you might stand a better chance, especially with those companies that export, and therefore your English skills could actually be quite valuable.

Of course, that's just my own opinion, based on experience here in Colombia, and I hope you do strike lucky. Good luck.

What kind of engineer are you? Would you know how to engineer a crib wall?

Thanks, Martin

Why would a Colombian company hire an American engineer when there are many highly qualified engineers in Colombia to choose from. Besides you need a work visa and a cedula to apply for work and you will need to speak fluent spanish. I doubt any Colombian company will hire you only because you are american unless you have such a qualification that they need and Colombians don't have.

I was watching a Colombian Channel CARACOL and I just saw this program called ONBOARD " Mobile Outdoor Classroom". The website is www.beonboard.org and I just thought it might be interesting for you since you want to travel to Colombia. I live in New York city and I just happened to watch it. I also replied to somebody else in the chat because it might be helpful.

You havent stated if you are fluent in Spanish or if you need a Visa to work here. If both are not a problem then you could probably well get a job, however as has been mentioned if really helps if you know someone or have contacts (also you need to state your branch of engineering as this makes a difference). Otherwise you will be generally restricted to the lower levels of employment. As you mentioned agencies are next to useless here, they only contact you if they need someone and I have a sneaky feeling its often just to fill their quotas. If you are an engineering manager / supervisor you have a higher chance of getting a reasonable job (again with Spanish and Visa proviso´s). As Rafapark put it there are many Colombian engineers here already, its quite a popular profession so you really need to have something they dont or be up to scratch with spanish to at least reasonably compete on a level playing field. Another option is to try to work remotely from here but for a US/overseas firm depending upon your branch of engineering.
