Hi. I am a soon-to-be TEFL graduate and retired corporate executive who has been living in Chiang Mai, Thailand for about 6 weeks. I have decided to relocate in March to Medellin after my research and am excited about the prospects there. Also, as an American, I like the proximity back to North America should it be necessary or needed. My questions is about potential neighborhoods in which to rent. Poblado seems upscale but I want to be open to less glitz and more charm. I'll be looking for a very nice furnished 1 bedroom in a good area and will rely on public transport for now. So, any advice on smart, charming areas in addition to Poblado? Many thanks...gracias amigos.

Charming was a fine word for centuries, but it's been beaten to a pulp by real estate folks and it now tells you nothing. What one finds charming the next thinks intolerable. Bullfights come to mind. But if quirky is what you mean, try Sabaneta.

My recommendation for you is to come, stay on a temporary home or a hotel for a few weeks and start looking. Poblado has expensive places but also affordable places. As the previous poster suggested, try Sabaneta. Also Envigado and in between. Key is security. And plan to learn the language quickly. Spanish is not that hard. Also look at all the posts discussing recent changes on tax laws. There are other countries that are a lot more tax friendly for retirees.
