Just a tangential question to gringo2u's . . . .

Is there a cut-off age for private insurance in Colombia like there is in Costa Rica?

In Costa Rica at the age of 70 your private insurance ends and that is mandatory. Then you have to enroll in the CAJA. That is CR's Seguro Social, socialized health care.

So is it like that in Colombia?

Just curious.

How would you apply to Comfenalco? I'm having trouble finding actual locations to apply anywhere at for an EPS, the websites just list phone numbers that are never answered. -#%^€£&&@!!!

Here are a few statistics from within our family"

Age 53 - EPS 86,200 - Prepago 305,562
Age 74 - EPS 86,200 - Prepago 683,105
Age 82 - EPS 86,200 - Prepago 744,568

All the above costs are MONTHLY

The EPS is with Sanitas and the Prepago with Colsanitas.

I had to search for a prepago that would take persons over 70. Colsanitas was one of a small handful that would consider it.

Total monthly bill for 3 persons = COP 1,991,885....it ain't cheap, but it is worthwhile if you have something serious that needs urgent attention. I would not have considered paying anything like that when we were all much younger, but you will be surprised how the aches and pains rack up as the years go by.

Do over 70's need a physical - Yes.

Are pre-existing illnesses covered in the prepago - No.

It has been my experience that web pages in Colombia are sometimes almost useless.

Same thing applies to trying to get information on the telephone. The phones are usually answered by persons with zero training in their product or in customer service. They will give you any answer just to get you off the phone.

It has been my experience that going in person to the insurance office will net you more information more quickly than just about any other means.

It has been my experience you should shop around carefully for insurance. For example I have Coomeva and it costs 93,000 month. I´m 68.

When I inquired in the city at the Coomeva office they quoted me about 480,000 for the same package. I went outside the city to a pueblo and got this package for 93,000. I can´t explain why the difference other than to say the pueblos are lower estrado.

I can add my girlfriend and her kids (if she had any) to this plan and the price would only go up a few mil. For the moment she has her own plan through her employer.

So far my only additional costs have been a 2,700 peso co-pay to have tooth filled and another time to have them cleaned. I understand that if I were on any medications I would also have a copay of 2,700 pesos per prescription.

I have a friend who is 76 and he is paying the same for his plan as I am. He lives in a pueblo also.

Insurance is incredibly confusing here, sort of like it is confusing in the US.
Good luck with your search.

I am 71. Today I went to Coomeva on Carrera 15 in Bogota. I met with a representative. I do not know everything yet but the following information is reliable (if i understood correctly.) They only offer one policy for people my age-Oro. The monthly premium is 'about' 730.000 pesos + EPA (around another 130.000 pesos) The premiums go up at age 75. There are discounts for paying the monthly premium in advance-a year in advance gets you a 6% discount. There is a small copayment each visit. The drug coverage is only for those drugs associated with a hospital stay. (I have an opinion about this policy but all are best served by evaluating it on their own. No doubt that there exists an option at my age is remarkable).

morgan stern, thanks for posting, very useful information.
I am wondering two things......is it possible for you to go to a pueblo outside of Bogota and inquire at the Coomeva office, and give them a pueblo address? I wonder what that outcome would be.
Secondly, I have a friend who is 76 and paying 122,000 for Coomeva in a pueblo outside Medellin.
I also knew a gringo who died at age 76 and had been on Coomeva for 5 years and was paying about the same thing I pay, 92,000 monthly.
I wonder why that could be? Obviously there is a world of difference between your quote, and my experience, so I wonder if maybe I´m not covered at all, or I am in some low payout pool that will get me nothing when I need it. Although so far I´ve received excellent doctor and dental visits and only a couple times had to pay a small copay of 2,700.
I do recall the gringo who died at 76 was in and out of the hospital for a year or so before he died and he got full coverage except for his co-pay of about 2500 for certain meds.
Mysterious, isn´t it?

I too utilize Coomeva with a coat of 90000 cop for family of five. The elders in the Colombia family use

Although they are in subsidio not contrubitivo... It's worth a little investigation.

"I have a friend who is 76 and paying 122,000 for Coomeva"

......As I understand things (and not very well)...there is a cooperative behind the insurance company and membership in the cooperative is not required but the monthly cost for the cooperative is about this amount! The health insurance cost goes down when you are a member of the co-op.
