I can't believe I am typing this but today is the day I move to Colombia (Cali, from California, for some irony). I ended up with a 12 hour layover in BOG, and I have a couple of questions; I won't be making it back to BOG for some time, any advice on what to do to kill a few hours in the city (I will be there on a Sunday during daylight hours and have never been in the city (or the country for that matter)). I assume I will be clearing customs in BOG, how much time should I allow to get through customs to go to board my flight to Cali? THANKS!

At least you've got spontaneity on your side. Lots of newcomers would have fretted for weeks over this 12-hour layover. Remember it's 8,600-feet above sea level before you decide on running a marathon.

Yes but what Bogota lacks in oxygen, it makes up for in smog. ;)
I advised him to hang in the barrio close to the airport where there are lots of hotels and nice bars and restaurants.
AND that Avianca flies BOG/CLO every hours.

El museu de Orro if they are open on Sunday's would be my suggestion.
Can easily kill 2 worthwhile hours or more inside there.
Just remember to take the guided tour in English to gain the full appreciation of what is is.

The Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) is a good recommendation. Another is Mount Monserrate if it's not raining.
Your long layover would permit time to do both.
If you incoming flight to Bogotá is Avianca and the flight to Cali is also Avianca your checked bags should be checked all the way to Cali and no need to collect and recheck in Bogotá.

Mucho Gracias! I ended up doing Monserrate but then got rained out. Took a taxi-tour of the city. It was enjoyable. Now settled in Cali!

Make sure you go up to Cristo Rey, you get a fantastic view of the city and it's nice and cool!

Good to read this. I am currently in Cali since Oct 7 until Nov 14th, when I return to Canada (for hopefully only a short time). I've got a 16 hour layover in BOG, before my flight to Toronto. So it's great to hear options....
