There's lots of English teaching locations in Medellin. What area are you near so someone can recommend something close to you?

Terry, how is your Spanish coming after four years?

At my age I find it very difficult to stay awake studying Spanish, I'd rather study/play chess. To answer your question its still pretty basic.

Here is a person that I used as a tutor on skype in the U.S. She also teaches here locally, as she lives here. An excellent teacher and nice person, She was the first person I visited in Medellin about 4 years ago. I have not talked to her lately.
I will post a recommendation from someone else here as they say it better than I can.

"I have just finished a day of conversational Spanish with Monica Davila, [email protected]. She is a spanish teacher in Medellin. She is excellent. We did conversational spanish but she also does grammar. Besides in person lessons, she can also do Skype. Her fees are very reasonable.

We did a day of exploration in Medellin while talking Spanish. Since she is also fluent in English, it was easy to communicate when I did not know the spanish word or had difficulties with grammar.

The best thing about Monica is that she speaks clear, articulate and deliberate Spanish. For those of us who have difficulty in understanding Spanish, Monica is a perfect fit.

Finally, she is a very kind and patient teacher. You cannot do better."

Hola Betty Ann,

Hope you find yourself a suitable tutor of spanish to help you out, but until you do here is a free language teaching site that may be of use to you.

It's called Duolingo and here is a list of the languages that they offer at:
https://www.duolingo.com/courses/en

Their Spanish course is the first item listed on the page.

The Duolingo courses offer grammar, vocabulary and written translation practice as well as voice recognition drills which you type out after hearing the spoken sentences. You are allowed to proceed at your own pace which removes a lot of the anxiety of new language acquisiton.

I used Duolingo a couple years ago to brush up on my Portuguese and am presently using it to polish my Esperanto skills which I have not used in four decades. It's helping a lot.

Duolingo is not absolutely perfect but it is really quite good and can start you off at a beginner's level if needed and will start you off with basic spanish skills, like pronunciation & comprehension.

Give it a look-see. You may discover it to be 'lo que necesitas!'

¡Buena Suerte y Saludos!

Paul M.

PS – I have no financial interest in Duolingo. I'm just a satisfied user.
