You seem to be moving really fast, Nuqui.
If your intro information is correct, you haven’t moved to Colombia yet.
It’s highly recommended that you live here a year in the target area before buying property (or hiring a property lawyer).
Along the way, you’ll likely meet one or more Expats who have bought property in this city .. and who could recommend their lawyer.
Consider getting past the visa application hurdles before buying anything.

"In a related situation, my attorney recently forwarded to me a COL accountant’s tax opinion .. that if I do not pay federal income tax in the U.S. that I do not have to pay income tax in Colombia"
cccmedia, you must know a few good attorneys in that area. Share your knowledge and experience.

Thanks thats good advice normally but I own property in other latin countries and I am a realtor-investor that has spent a lot of time in Colombia over the past 6 years but thought someone on this forum would have contacts and feedback.

Nuqui, I don't have anyone to recommend but will have my wife ask around. English is a little more rare in Armenia than some other parts of Colombia but you never know. We may buy something soon but haven't made the decision yet.

The attorney who facilitated that tax opinion is Alan Gongora, managing partner of Langon Colombia Law Group.
Alan’s Colombia office is in Medellín, not Armenia/Quindío .. so I didn’t mention him earlier on this thread.
His work for me to date has been excellent .. and he does the most rapid turnaround re emailed questions and drafts of documents of any attorney I have worked with (3) in South America.

My brother in law works in a real estate law office in Armenia. He doesn't speak English, but I think the lawyer there does.
I'll PM you with the info...

tryagain, jonrod was quoting cccmedia from another post, and his situation probably does not apply to you...do not assume that you will not pay taxes in Colombia just because you do not pay taxes in the USA. Why would you assume that?
Say you lived in a country where millionaires paid no taxes and you were one. If you then moved to a country where the average salary was $5000/year, and those people paid taxes, do you think they would let you pay no taxes just because you did not in your country?

yes I do, because we expats support their economy and create jobs for their citizens by spending our money in their country don't you think?

I'm sure the way you feel about paying taxes will persuade DIAN to make an exception in your case! Please let us know how it works out.

well hey , I am a law abiding guy, if I have to pay I'll pay my share . I am nobody to tell the government what to do. I am sure lots of expats share the same point of view.
