Been here a few days and surprise! This is a great city. Of course it is hot as hades, but the action is late night/early morning when it is cooler. Medellin is sterile compared to Cali but it really works.good bars and restaurants all over town,no "zona rosa" bs. And the locals love extranjeros especially if you give them QUE MAS,for como estas.(thanx cc media) and wear a local shirt related to soccer! while maybe too hot to live, I will come back .It is much more fun than Medellin.

Cali is indeed a wonderful place! If only it was about 10 F (5 C or so) cooler on average...
You should buy an América de Cali jersey, it's a popular team and will make you more friends than enemies...
If you haven't already make sure you ascend to Cristo Rey for a wonderful view of the city. And the zoo is well worth a visit, too.

I did go to that great little zoo. Also museo Tertulia which was a major disappointment. I guess it depends on the current exhibit Will go to cristo rey and gold museo tomoro.

I didn't like Cali when I was first exploring Colombia a few years ago. I found it too hot, too disorganized, and too slummy in most areas.
I might have to take another trip back now that I've been living in Colombia for a while.

@pittsburgh Conshohocken here, near Philly. I expected to see the cali you describe, but did not. I'm sure there is still much of what you describe. I'm looking,....moved over to barrio san Antonio, and went today to visit barrio granada.going back tonight. Martyns pub with classic rock and nice mix of locals and a few touristas is a must go.publican martyn from ingleterre runs the scene and is a pro. Try to compare that with Patricks, not even in the same league.

Didn't make it to Cali but I did make it to Patrick's. Could not eat the fish & chips. Covered it with a nappy and went to the Italian place.

Aside from the heat, what is best way to find a place to live there in Cali. My retirement is $2000 monthly. Thank you, have a great day.

I don't think there's any better way than to put your feet on the ground and explore by car.
Personally I like the south of Cali where my wife's family lives in the barrio Ciudad Capri - it's safe and quiet, and convenient to many things. There are other good neighborhoods around there too. I'd stay away from the east part of the city generally.
And consider the estrato - generally you'd want to live in estrato 3, 4 or 5 where the higher estrato is richer and usually safer with more amenities nearby.
But if I were to look for somewhere to stay apart from the family's home, I'd look a bit to the southwest in the corregimientos La Luisa and La Buitrera, which are higher up and cooler.
You can also try Locanto for Cali:
http://cali.locanto.com.co/
Under Inmobiliaria there are listings for apartments, rooms and houses for rent and for sale - many of these are by the owners. The price is sometimes firm, sometimes negotiable - it never hurts to offer less. And you are not looking at "gringo" pricing but nevertheless it's common that they ask more than they eventually settle for, especially for sale not so much for rent. Plus you get an idea of the market.

One of my favorite places in Medellin is getting off the metro at san antonio station and going down to the street below.Especially on sundays. It is not sanitized.Gritty and real. As with most cities the dispossesed are constantly pushed from area to area. They wont be tolerated in sanitized poblado. Bob, no need to get personal. if you disagree with my or Steve's opinion, that shows you are mentally alive. why not give us the reasons you prefer Medellin.? If you want to say our opinions are not worth much, because (in your OPINION) we have not been there long enough or frequently enough or far reaching enough ,then say so man! Passive- aggressive? I wont ask for your bona fides as to where you have visited, or for how long, in Colombia,or world wide, which form the basis for your OPINION.in short, I will not engage in a pissing contest with you. Your two posts on this subject have contributed zero. You can do better,i'm sure.

Augieman,
Not personal
You made the statement "sterile Medellin" and just trying to understand why you would think that as your observations are out of the norm especially in reference to night life. I also noted you like rock or classic rock music and I have a couple of great clubs I go to and listen to some live rock on the weekends.
By the way a forum is a place for discussion and I think appropriate to ask question to try and learn more about a posters opinion. And potentially possibly the poster may learn something. But in your case maybe not??

Bob Thanks for the response. Glad it is not personal. But you could not contain yourself and ended with a trite banal and decidedly personal slur. Ah well....

Its all fun not serious I assure you.
Not on topic but if you do decide to go back to Medellin and want to listen to some live Classic Rock, try Pub Rock on LA 33 or the Underground across the street to start with. The Colombians know how to rock!!!
And I still disagree with much if not all of what you said about Medellin but I kind of think you know that.

Generous reply.thanks for the tips. I will be up from cali for a week in medellion on my way back to Pty. I will surely check out those spots. Con mucho gusto. And for ccmedia and whoa nellie a real ice breaker in reply to con mucho gusto is " el gusto es mio" The mujeres especially get a big kick from that.

My GF is from Valle, so we visit Cali more then the other "major" towns. I have come to like Cali. I first that it to be dirty, grity, and without any excitement, but, alas! I found San Antonio, Dapa, and the South Cali. We have an Apt. being built(expect my arrival in 2018!!). Once there I would like to look for a weekend get away in Dapa, where the temp is way cooler, and the surroundings more finca like. My GF would like to have a second place in Kilometro 18, or Queremal. both areas have much nicer weather to get away from the Hot Salsa, from time to time!

On the road up to Dapa about halfway is one of the most beautiful little series of cascades/waterfall that I have seen anywhere, with small pools after each falls and a larger pool at the bottom. You may see several cars parked at the hairpin turn as locals enjoy the fresh cool water. The coolness of Dapa and Km 18 are much appreciated!

A little off topic here but... I want to visit Cali but really need to count on reliable wifi for using my laptop. That is, not just chatting on my phone, but browsing online with my laptop. I'm a programmer and need good wifi where I travel. Is it reliable in Cali?
