Problems at Customs with a Return Flight Booked Over 90 Days?

Post New Topic

Dear Forum,

Will I encounter difficulties with the Aduana if the return leg of my flight is booked beyond the 90-day tourist stamp? Can I book a 6-month round trip flight and expect to pass through customs hassle-free? I'm a US citizen (obviously allowed 180 days/yr on a tourist visa).

The aim of my trip is to find a full-time job that will sponsor me for a resident visa.

Best,
#overit

Well you not necessarily going to get 180 days of the bat. More than likely you will get 90 with a return to migracion close to 90 days to request for an extension. If you want 180 upon arrival, talk up the customs officer, you might get lucky but don't expect it. On tip that, I wouldn't say I was looking for a job on a tourist visa. It's generally a no no.

Easy solution, have an itinerary on another airline for a departing flight, if your itinerary is on your computer you can change the dates. The customs people rarely ask, it is most likely the airline agent at the gate who will ask and try to sell you another ticket, just show them a bogus itinerary from a travel agent and that's it.

1. They won't give you 180 days on a tourist stamp. Ask for 90 and explain, if necessary, that you will renew in Colombia. The agents know all about extending your permit. It's no secret to the airlines either.

2. Just tell them it's tourism, or if applicable, medical tourism. In my case, I told them truthfully I was planning to move to COL and was visiting multiple areas of the country.

I renewed my permit last week for another 90 days and, following the widely-available advice online on how to do it, it was a snap.

I seriously doubt that they will check your return date. When you enter all you usually get is a very congenial "Welcome to Colombia". Just don't mention the job search. Your a tourist eager to explore the country! To be on the safe side book a separate full fare flight out of the country before the 90 day limit. Cancel it at first opportunity and get your refund.

I have a slightly different situation. When I entered Colombia I got the 180 tourist deal, but they only gave me 90 days on entry. After two months I went to Migracion Colombia and asked for another 90 days and they showed me one of the requirements is to have a return ticket.

So, you are good to go, just go to Migracion Colombia BEFORE your first 90 days is up and show them your return ticket and they will extend your visa to the full 180 days after you pay a fee of 92,000.

In my case, I did not have a return ticket at all, but I explained to them I was here in Colombia looking for a job and a place to live and I intend to apply for a Work Visa before my 180 day tourist visa expires. They were all smiles, took my 92,000, gave me a 90 day extension. The whole thing took about 5 minutes.

As a side note, it is perfectly okay to look for a job while you are here on a tourist visa. I told them I was looking for a teaching position at a university and they smiled and wished me good luck and gave me a web page address to look up the requirements for applying for the work visa. Piece of cake.

Good luck

Aduana won't care how long you stay, only about what you bring; Migracion runs the jungle detention camps for detainee wetbacks, where all get you get to eat are arepas.
