Having a Colombian wife or husband can save 2 years on your residency requirements. The temporary visa TP10 for spousal or partner is renewed every year for 3 years, versus every year for 5 years for Pensionado TP7 for example. Here is the web page for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) in Bogota.

Thanks. sounds like it maybe be easier to get married in the states and get a green card, then return to Colombia.

In Colombia or the US? No problem in the US as I have practiced it twice before! I just not sure how the process for a visa might change if you both return to Colombia married.

So have I and getting married in the USA is not an easy thing. It takes money and more than a few months. It is way easier to get married in Colombia and definitely cheaper. A K1 via take five months, required several trips to Bogota, doctor appointment, blood tests, an interview, and of course documentation. Then flight to USA , to get married and more cost make her legal including months and months. Again it is way easier to simply get married in Columbia.

My gal already has a 10 year US visa, been here twice, we've RV'd the northwest US, and had enough ups and downs to know we want to be together. I fly to Colombia next month, see the country and meet her family. Then we fly back to the US. Once we are married and apply for her green card, the time for her to leave the country, usually 6 months, is suspended. We then plan to return to Colombia for Christmas and decide where to live. Unless Trump screws that up too!

Here is a lawyer´s page that discusses the three options for bringing a foreign fiancee or wife to the US. As Big pointed out, it is not easy and it is not cheap. It seems to me the easier and faster of the three options is to marry in her country then apply on K3. http://www.alllaw.com/articles/nolo/us-immigration/get-married-abroad-bring-your-foreign-fiance-to-u.s.html#

I think that makes sense if there is no valid US visa for the fiancée. But she has that and can freely travel here. We'd get the AZ marriage docs translated into Spanish. I'm just trying to determine what are the options and process when we return to Colombia if we decide to stay. Thanks for all the thoughts.

Since we have children, we are probably staying in the USA. Better opportunity for them. Best of luck either way :)

If you want your Colombian wife to live in the US, or at least have US citizenship to travel freely to and from when you wish, then the k1 Fiancee visa is the only (smart) way to go. Do not make the mistake of getting married in Colombia and then go through the LONG process of bringing her to the US. Just my 2 cents!

Again, I think there is some misunderstanding as my Colombiana HAS a US visa, good for another 7 years. So she comes here, we marry here, we apply for the green card at which point the tourist length of stay of 6 months is waived until the green card is issued. My question remains as to my getting a Colombian visa if we chose to live in Colombia vice the US, Mexico, or Panama. We have choices, and I am trying to determine the Colombian visa process for me if we are already married. From what I am seeing here, many of you chose to marry a Colombiana in Colombia because she/he did not already have a US 10 year tourist visa.

Your wife has what type of US visa? (I'm not familiar with 10 year US visas.) And you should be clearer as to where "here" is. And "vice" i assume is "versus". Do you want her to have US citizenship before settling in Colombia? If she is Colombian why can't you move to Colombia and get a spousal visa?

FYI, if a Colombian girlfriend comes to the USA on a tourist visa planning to marry, the Feds can say that is a violation of the visa terms.
If she comes to the US on a tourist visa and on the spur of the moment decides to marry, it can be argued that it is not a violation.
This is what our immigration attorney told us 13 years ago when my wife and I were in a similar situation.

Chick, she has a tourist visa? As far as I know, that's a no no for marriage and if that's the plan, deficient do not mention it when she enters the US. Technically, a visa only gets you to the border and each entry stands on its own. Merit. Marriage could get in the way of the green card which is running up to one year depending on where you file. If you go that route as well, you can visit the Colombian consulate and can set you up with Colombian visa.

Tourism, vacation, pleasure visitor: B2
Go to travel.state.gov or google US Visas. A wealth of information we hope does not change with Trump.

My understanding of tourist visas and marriage is that if you can prove that you have had a long relationship, then the marriage and green card application will not be considered as a sham. We can prove via friends and photos over time. I realize nothing is certain with the current administration regarding any kind of immigration. We are keeping all options open and can move easily to Mexico (before the wall is built to keep us in!) or to Panama where I had a home and already have a non-cancelable resident visa.

For the fiancee k1 visa, no long relationship is necessary. Requirements include proving you were together outside of the US. This includes your plane tickets, hotel receipts and photos of the two of you together.
