I'm reading differing reports about cockroaches in Colombia. My areas of interest are Pereira and Armenia.
Most say they are everywhere, but are they a problem in apartment buildings, too, especially several floors up? Does it depend on whether the landlord is fumigating?
I guess I'd consider Medellin if cockroaches are under control there.
And what about restaurants? Hotels?
Someone please tell me that humanity has not been defeated by cockroaches in Colombia.
Thx.

Yes cockroaches are everywhere and no there are not normally a problem. In Pereira and Armenia and Medellin and Bucaramanga and the coast and down south, they are everywhere, but routine spraying will keep them at bay. I live in nice estrado 4 apartment in a building that is sprayed a few times each year and I get one dead cockroach to sweep up a few times each week. Not a serious problem in my opinion. A few places I´ve lived I sprayed myself and the bottle of spray is very cheap and effective, Buy it at the grocery store. Costs a few dollars for a bottle that lasts a year or more.

To leave those cockaroaches behind, you'll need to catch a Star Trek flight to a place no man has ever gone before

Cockroaches never seem to be a problem in Cali - I think the geckos eat them all.
But there are tiny little ants that seem to get into everything. Have to set the sugar bowl in a dish filled with water to keep them out...

Since most bath and service rooms are built without windows, there is always the chance of the odd cockroach getting in but I have never been troubled by them. Obviously the higher and thus cooler you are, the less you will see.

Uh oh. Where is this, tubes, that most bath and service rooms are built without windows? I presume you mean windows without screens or glass?
Thx.

Hmmm . . . so "window" doesn't necessarily presume "glass"? Never thought about that. So ya, I guess PRS is correct. :) If there is square or rectangular (or round) hole to the outside you can't say the room is a "windowless room".

The whole of Colombia! Most bathrooms are open to the outside towards the top with no windows. It is plenty warm enough (except in Bogota, Manizales, Pasto..). In my previous apartment I had open slatted windows also in the kitchen. Most windows are poorly closing slatted types.

tubes, we've had half a dozen friends who have stayed in high rises in Medellin and none of them had these open windows. Perhaps the high rises are an exception?

That is odd. I have stayed in several Medellin high rises and they all had open bathrooms, some with open kitchens too. Some buildings have internal bathrooms without an outside wall and have ventilation ducts.
