I am going down to visit someone I have known for years here on the internet. She lives in Cali. We will be staying at a place I am renting that I found on AirBnb. In Barrio San Antonio. Any information about the city would be greatly appreciated. I don't plan on being out late. Like, I will be home before 7:30 p.m.

I'm from the east side of Detroit. Every other place I've been looks pretty safe to me, except East St. Louis, of course. You friend in Cali is still alive and breathing? She'll know what areas to avoid.

7:30 p.m.? The salsa places don't even open till later than that.
Except for this one place that might be perfect for the crime-averse OP.
Of course, I refer to Viejoteca Pardo Llada, the Sunday afternoon salsa party at the senior center. 2-7 p.m.
The old timers are known to show some pretty fancy moves.

I live in San Fernando, about 500 yds from el Estadio, and feel perfectly safe there. It can be a little rowdy during the futbol games at the stadium but I have not felt unsafe there. I have often gone for walks in the neighborhood during the later evening. Of course, there are areas where I don't go and even the taxi drivers roll up their windows and lock their doors at night. But I've had that in many places in N. America too.
Great places to dance? La Topa Tolandra on Calle 5 (across from the Parque Artesana Loma de la Cruz) is an awesome place. I have been there till 2:30 or 3 and the dancing never stops. It's usually best to get there by 9 to make sure you get a table.

why does everybody think that Cali is so dangerous. I have a home in central Florida and everyday on the news there is at least and I say at least one murder in Orlando but I never hear people ask if Orlando is crime ridden and there are thousands of tourist there everyday. I also have an apartment in Cali. My first apartment was in estrado 2 now I live in a 3. I have walked the streets at 3 am before and trust me I look gringo and I have never had a problem. My wife is Colombian and go to centro all the time and the only problem there is so many people sometimes it is hard to walk through all the people and I am just an old country boy never lived in the city before.

Cali is on the list of the 50 most dangerous cities in the world due to its high homicide rate that is now about 3 times the homicide rate in Medellín. Medellín is no longer on the list - http://www.elconfidencial.com/alma-corazon-vida/2016-09-23/las-50-ciudades-mas-peligrosas-del-mundo-5-son-de-mexico-donde-murio-maria-villar_1264111/
Also Cali didn't do very well in a survey of Colombians in 2015 - only 30% in Cali felt safe in their city. See slide 40 in this - http://redcomovamos.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Presentaci%C3%B3n-EPC-Comparada-2015_RedC%C3%B3moVamos_02122015_.pdf

Every place seems safe until something happens to you.
But from the other point of view, who wants to spend thier life like a frightened nervous nellie school girl hiding under a rock.?
I have probably spent over 6 months living and visiting Cali over the years without iincident..though Cali is pretty low on my list of "preferred" Colombian cities.
Just use your head, do what your friend says and you will be OK

Absent secret vices or expensive compulsions and at $2,000US a month you should be able to live comfortably while banking a third of that or more.

Pretty much anywhere in Latin America, without any of the aforementioned vices......you can live very nicely.........Costa Rica could still be tuff.......In Cali, dont miss the zoo.......Its very nicely laid out.......and a great selection of animals.......and critters...........and do beware of central Cali after dark........make sure you carry something.......stun gun, pepper gas........at least something as an insurance policy.......Ive had close calls........but long time ago........
