Hello everyone, I'm moving back to Medellin and I am considering taking a new car. Can you tell me if it's worth the paperwork and if so how much it would be the total. For example, the taxes and fees. Thank you for your help. If anyone wants to give me tips and heads up for a successful return.

I believe it would be cheaper to buy it there, and if necessary. take it with you out of Colombia.. I've never done it myself but have been told it cost you about 25% over what you pay. You can only bring a brand new vehicle, as in no km, into Colombia.

If you ever return to the US, however, it won't be with an automobile built to Colombian specs. Emissions and safety controls will be substantially different. Can't even bring a brand-new Canadian car into the US and many of those are identical products from the same assembly lines, but with different paperwork from the manufacturer. Very strange auto market -- ~48 million Colombians, 150-250,000 annual production. Boutique is a word that may apply here.

Basically only diplomats can import a car into Colombia, unless it is a 'classic' and over 30 years old.
There are stiff import duties (30%+) on cars which make them more expensive than in some other countries.

You might eant to recheck your information on bringing Canadian cars into the US.
Thousands of used Canadian cars come into the US every day, through dealer exchanges, and privately owned vehicles can be brought over as well. There is a required import declaration, but it's not too difficult.

Yes you can bring in a New car or a used car over 30yrs old.
0 KMs is not the requirement it has to be same model year as year of entry and it can not have been registered any where else.
The import tax is going to vary on what model you import. No one can give you a correct price but DIAN.

My comments were directed to the original question, i.e., importing/exporting new cars, not used cars between Canada and the US. That ban was imposed in 1986, after the politically influential US border state dealer body saw too many sales lost to a 25% currency premium. Sorry some were confused.
